2012 Annual Report Dear Friend: Through the generosity of our donors, corporate partners and funders, we are happy to report that Benevilla was able to help nearly 6,000 deserving families, individuals and children this past year. If you talk with a staff member or volunteer, they’ll be the first to share with you a “mission moment” of how they changed the life of a senior, family or child through our services. In this report we are sharing three client stories representing the broad range of our programs. The stories reflect how Benevilla provides: • Hot, healthy meals for a senior in need • Transportation to doctor appointments for a couple unable to drive • Assistance to a couple struggling with early onset Alzheimer’s The diversity of our services allows Benevilla to help keep our clients and participants independent in their homes as long as possible. With the successful completion of our Fulfilling the Promise campaign, Benevilla will be able to continue providing these services well into the future. We want to thank all of our generous donors, partners and funders. Our shared goal of inspiring hope and change in the lives of the most deserving people in our community is a partnership we value each day.

Lives You’ve Helped Us Change Like a lot of widowed seniors, Lu once loved cooking for her husband and two girls. As the years progressed the girls moved on to their own lives, her husband passed, and Lu found herself less and less interested in cooking for one. Eventually, days would go by without her eating anything substantial, and she was losing weight quickly. Her daughter Candy stopped by the Benevilla campus one day and spoke with Jane Bruzzese, Senior Director of Programs, about her options. Jane explained about Benevilla’s program delivering hot, nutritious meals to homebound adults and seniors, and Candy was sold. Lu began receiving meals delivered by Benevilla volunteers, and she loves them. “I’m so grateful that we found Benevilla’s Home Delivered Meals program,” states Candy. “Without it I’m not sure Mom would still be here.”

Virginia and David L. have been using Benevilla’s transportation services for nearly three years. There are weeks when they need as many as three round-trip rides to medical appointments. Their daughter Madelyn says, “little things can mean so much when you don’t have the option of running to the store whenever you need to. The transportation has been a tremendous help for all of us. It frees me up to spend time with my grandkids, and the time spent with my parents is more meaningful.”

The signs began in his 50s, and, at age 59, Steve received the diagnosis — early onset Alzheimer’s. Like most people, they coped, but eventually Mary sought outside assistance at an east valley day center. Following a move to Sun City, they looked around for a better option and found Benevilla. Mary has noticed a profound difference in Steve since he came to Lucy Anne’s Place. For example, at Lucy Anne’s Place, Steve is encouraged to bring his trumpet out whenever he feels like it - and he is rapidly becoming known for his music. His favorite activity by far is the Intergenerational Program. “I love the kids,” Steve says. “They’re so much fun and so full of energy. They remind me of my youth.” “Between the music and the activities, Steve comes home pleasantly exhausted and takes a nap,” Mary explains. “At the old center he was always looking for something to do. That’s never an issue here.”

2012 Accomplishments 281,191 hours of service and 125,718 individual acts of service were provided to the community. 4,667 callers needing guidance were assisted by Benevilla’s information and referral service. 173 new volunteers began their service with Benevilla. 30,864 hours — the equivalent of over $672,000 — were contributed by volunteers in 2012. These contributions helped save Arizona taxpayers money by decreasing the need for public assistance in our community. 2,621 escorted rides were provided to medical appointments and necessary errands, helping to keep seniors healthy and independent. 1,445 grocery deliveries were made to neighbors in need by Benevilla volunteers, ensuring that homebound individuals had easy access to food and sundries. 200 holiday meals were served to individuals who were alone or unable to cook on their own. 8,108 home delivered meals were provided to 173 seniors and homebound individuals. Volunteers drove 23,719 miles and contributed 3,633 hours delivering meals. 11 ongoing support groups helped caregivers of seniors, the intellectually disabled, Parkinson’s patients, and grandparents raising grandchildren. Benevilla’s new Grandparents Raising Grandchildren program helped keep children with family — helping reduce both the need for group/foster homes and the tax burden on the average Arizonan.
