The Honorable Ken Horn, Chairman Senate Economic Development Committee Michigan State Senate P.O. Box 30036 Lansing, MI 48909 Dear Chairman Horn: Cornerstone Alliance, the lead Economic Development agency of Berrien County, strongly encourages you to support new opportunities for Michigan residents by supporting the Good Jobs for Michigan proposal – Senate bills 242, 243 and 244. The Good Jobs for Michigan legislation will allow us to come closer to competing on a level playing field for new business and the expansion of high-wage jobs in Michigan. Michigan has made progress in the last five years to create a more competitive business environment. However, other states and countries around the world are not standing still. Michigan must do better. The Trump administration has prioritized bringing jobs back to the U.S. Cornerstone Alliance recently spent time and resources traveling to Italy, Austria and Germany in an effort to recruit U.S. exporters to the State of Michigan. These companies recognize the changing landscape and are looking to add jobs and investment in the United States. Michigan needs to be ready to compete for these jobs. Many states view incentives as a necessity and an essential tool for creating jobs and net new revenue. This is especially true of competitors in the south, including Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. During my recent trip to Europe, all other members of the delegation were from the South. They take economic development seriously and have business climates as good as Michigan’s and have stronger economic development tools than we have. Competing states, such as Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina, and Texas offer up to seven times more incentives than Michigan. Michigan needs to do more to create good paying jobs. We urge the committee’s support for additional economic development tools that will help Michigan create opportunities for its residents. Respectfully, Rob Cleveland, President, Cornerstone Alliance [email protected] (269) 363-8910 CC:
