“Average Person” by Paul McCartney Teaching Notes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmD9exFm4eI Teacher's instructions Group: Level: Skills: Estimated duration: Aims:

Approx. 20 students. Upper-intermediate / Advanced Reading, speaking, writing, listening. Approx. 1 hour and 15 minutes. To stimulate / appreciate creative writing.

INTRODUCTION Through reading and talking about the average UK / Catalan / Spanish man from statistics and clichés, students move into more general considerations about ordinary people in general. They listen to a song that tells three stories and then produce a story themselves. PART 1 (5 minutes) -Introduce topic: Students are going to read information from on-line newspapers about ‘the average UK man’. -SS work in groups of 5. -Cut out A, B, C, D, E and hand extracts out to each group. One extract per student. -Tell them to read the information and to try to remember as much as possible. PART 2 (20 minutes) -Collect all copies, or tell SS to put them away. -SS report what they have read to one another. -When reporting has finished, encourage group discussion on the possible similarities with Catalan men... -After some discussion in separate groups, allow some time for feedback from whole class. -Hand out / project F. As a whole class, or from separate groups, agree on a short “newspaper” / “statistical” description of the average Catalan man.

PART 3 (20 minutes) -Hand out G. This is actually the chorus of McCartney's song. Ask SS if they know. Do not give away any information if they don't know.

Generalitat de Catalunya Departament d’Ensenyament Escoles Oficial d’Idiomes -Tell SS to, in pairs / threes, quickly write a paragraph (6 lines) telling a little story about an ordinary person, man or woman to "complete" or "round off" the lines "Look at the average person. (…) Can you imagine the first one you’d meet?. Tell them to move away from statistical information now, encourage them to adopt a literary or humorous approach, and to actually tell a story, rather than describe. -Go round for help and to get feedback. -If enough time, read stories aloud... -At this point, SS should become aware of how difficult it is to tell a story in five lines... -Tell them you brought a good story teller... Introduce song and writer (McCartney)... and move on to Part 4... PART 4 (15 minutes) -Hand out I (complete lyrics) to 3 students. These go out of the room / to a different room to read and listen to the song, and try to remember as much as possible. -Hand out H to rest of group. Tell them they are going to listen to a song that contains three stories about ordinary people. Tell them to write key words in the corresponding boxes that will help them remember the stories. -Play song twice. Let SS compare notes and discuss. -Feedback. PART 5 (15 minutes) -Group with lyrics comes back into the room. Put their copies away. -SS work in groups of 3 or 4 trying to put stories together, comparing, etc... "I" students go round and help along (they are expected to remember more accurately), correcting and completing texts. -Conduct feedback: Tell SS to retell the three stories in their own words. See how much stories resemble the ones they wrote in part 3, etc... Possible follow-up / individual work: Expand one of the stories in song into a longer narrative text.
