MINUTES CITY OF PASADENA SENIOR COMMISSION Tuesday, May 9, 2017 2:00 PM Jackie Robinson Community Center, Room 200 1020 North Fair Oaks Ave. Pasadena, CA 91103

COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Priscilla Hernandez, Cheryl Hubbard, Mireya Asturias Jones, Robin Allen, Norma Aceituno, Angie Mont O’ Brien, Laura Romero, Peggy Buchanan, Kristen Tachiki, Patricia Wright, Charles Nelson COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Akila Gibbs (excused), Frank Sata (excused) GUESTS PRESENT: None STAFF PRESENT: Pamela Cantero, Charlene Porter 1. CALL TO ORDER/WELCOME/ROLL CALL Chair Priscilla Hernandez called the meeting to order at 2:13pm. Charlene Porter called the roll. A quorum was established for the Commission. 2. PUBLIC COMMENT ON MATTERS NOT ON THE AGENDA. No public comment 3. REVIEW AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES, April 11, 2017. After review, it was moved (Hubbard) and seconded (Wright) to approve the Minutes of April 11, 2017 with the following attendance revisions: Remove Jean Owen as her term has expired. Cheryl Hubbard, Norma Aceituno and Kristen Tachiki were present. Laura Romero was not in attendance (excused). Correct the spelling of Frank Sata’s last name. The motion was unanimously carried. 4. NEW BUSINESS INFORMATION ITEM



Presentations: Commissioner Buchanan introduced Mr. Rafi Nazarian, Associate State Director of Community for AARP. Mr. Sam Thomas who is a volunteer with the program was also introduced. Mr. Nazarian presented a slideshow on various services that are provided to the senior community as well as ways to approach the City Council on making Pasadena an Age Friendly Community. Literature was distributed and discussion followed.

ACTION ITEM  APPOINTMENT OF NOMINATING COMMITTEE FOR 2017-2018 OFFICERS. Commissioner O’Brien gave a general description on the nominating process. The interested Commissioners to serve on the committee are Buchanan, Jones and Wright. 5.

REPORTS AND COMMENTS FROM COMMISSIONERS, AD HOC COMMITTEES AND STAFF (Recurring Agenda Items) INFORMATION ITEMS ONLY

A. Report from the Chair Chair Hernandez reported on an upcoming 3 day seminar on 6/8, 6/15 and 6/22 from 9:00am – 11:00am or 10:00am – 12:00pm. The goal is to have various City Officials present as well as representatives from the Fire, Police and Health Departments. It will be on various topics such as senior resources within the City of Pasadena as well as ways of utilizing todays’ technologies. Venues of possible interest are Victory Park and the main library. B. Ad Hoc Committee/Task Force Reports  Senior Dementia Awareness (Gibbs, Romero, Tachiki) Commissioner Tachiki gave a brief overview of items related to Dementia Awareness. Discussion followed.  Senior Housing (Hubbard, Wright). Commissioner Hubbard reached out to the Pasadena Union Station about the senior homeless population.  Senior Mobility (Hubbard, Wright). No updates.  Senior Outreach/Education (Allen, Hernandez, O’Brien, Jones) Commissioner Allen suggested to focus on setting goals for all of the Committees. Commissioner Jones mentioned having more discussion on topics relating to senior scams. Discussion followed.

5. Commissioner Updates/Comments 

Jones reiterated that a strong effort should be made to approach the City Council on ways to implement the Age Friendly Community for the City of Pasadena.

6. Staff Updates  Pamela Cantero gave a brief overview of new senior technology programs taking place at Villa Park specifically for telephone and computers. 
