Little Richard This was the most wonderful and emotional horse baby birth that I have ever had the pleasure to experience, and we have had many of them. One because a palomino is something Richard Armstrong always wanted, but somehow everything he touched turned red or grey, go figure. Lol. Plus, getting a palomino boy and being able to name it Little Richard is just so awesome. But most of all I was able to experience it with two of my very special friends, Chris Due and Kimberly Fox-Guglielmi, which was the icing on the cake. From Jeffrey Burke’s Facebook Post

From your President It’s a Good Time to be a Member of NGRA It wasn’t that long ago (less than a year ago) that I sat in a meeting where a few people were asking, if it was time to disband NGRA and liquidate our assets. Those individuals were concerned that we had outlived our purpose in Nevada’s Gay Community. I’m glad to say that the majority of people, in that meeting, felt otherwise and no serious consideration was given to disbanding NGRA. Now, fast forward to April 2017 and I have to say, things are looking pretty good for us at the moment. The IRS has officially designated us as a 501(c)(3) organization, which is a status that NGRA has strived to achieve for years. Planning for BigHorn Rodeo 2017 is in full swing and is being organized by a great group of dedicated members, led by our Rodeo Director (and NGRA’s Vice President) Chris Due. It’s great to see people, on the Rodeo Planning Committee, who are so dedicated and passionate about what they’re doing. What’s more impressive is that, for the most part, these are not long-time April 2017 Newsletter

Page 3 of 45 NGRA members. These are relatively new members who are taking a real interest in the organization. They aren’t members who just paid their $24 and moved on. They’re members who paid their $24 for the “right” to donate countless hours of their personal time and, in some cases, their money, all in an effort to make BigHorn Rodeo, and NGRA, bigger and better than ever before. Things are definitely looking up for NGRA but don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying we’re completely out of the woods yet. Membership is still down and, unfortunately, we still have members who love this organization so much that they hurt this organization by airing their dirty laundry on social media but hopefully that too will start to change, in a more positive direction. NGRA’s future is looking better but we still need help. I’m sure Chris can always use more volunteers for his Rodeo Planning Committee, or for the rodeo itself, and we still don’t have a Marketing or PR Person who can help us get the name recognition that we need. Things are definitely looking up for NGRA and it’s a great time to be a member so please feel free to go out and help us recruit new members. Additionally, if you want to help but you’re not sure how, please feel free to contact me and we’ll talk. If you want to get involved but don’t have a lot of free time, we’ll work with your schedule and find something that will be mutually beneficial. Ken Hruby NGRA President [email protected]

BigHorn Rodeo 2017 Are you ready to rodeo? We hope to see everyone at Horseman’s Park on September 23rd and 24th for our annual BigHorn Rodeo! We’ve gotten off to a little later start than we would have liked, but the Rodeo Planning Committee has hit the ground running! Brenda Lee Luce-Alday and Jeffrey Neal have graciously accepted the positions of Assistant Rodeo Directors. Kathy Alday, Bryan Shields, Stewart Black, Christopher Sanders (Phat Patty) and Jason Dyer are currently making up the RPC, but we welcome anyone who wants to help out! We have several great and exciting things planned this year. Keep checking back for updates to what is happening. Some big surprises coming! The next RPC meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 11 th at the Henderson Saddle Association – Court House, located at 6490 Wiesner Way. Off Boulder Highway and Galleria. From your Vice President March was a crazy busy month for me! Last year, Richard Armstrong bred three of his prized mares to outstanding stallions. He was so looking forward to the magic bloodline crosses he had created. Unfortunately, Richard didn’t live long enough to see the fruits of his labors being born. I was lucky enough to call Richard my friend, and he entrusted me to carry out his wishes with his mares. On Tuesday, February 28th at 10:45 pm, we, Jeff Burke and myself, welcomed Little Hurricane Andy to this world. Andy is named for Richard’s amazing gelding, which he won two finals flag racing championships on. Little Andy is by my stallion, High Ya Doin (Howdy), out of Richard’s phenomenal mare, Proudest Surprise (Cassidy).

Page 5 of 45 On Friday, March 24th at 1:30 am, we welcomed Little Richard to our world! If anyone knew Richard, they knew of his love for palomino horses! Richard used to always get teased that any time he touched a mare, she would give birth to a sorrel (red) filly. Little Richard is by Gold Fame N Fortune out of Lyn’s Little Gun (Lena). Lena is the mare I ran at many IGRA rodeos over the last few years. Richard got his wish this year, a little yellow baby boy that we call Little Richard in his honor.

Hopefully soon we will have the third baby and then we can sit back and enjoy the genius breeding that Richard helped create! Look for these little guys on the IGRA Circuit in about 5 years! Chris Due NGRA Vice President [email protected]

Trustee’s News I know you’re still making plans for this year’s Finals in Albuquerque, but 2018 Finals has been set for October 25th – 28th in Scottsdale, Arizona. Nice and close to home so think about going next year. If you’re going to Denver, May 28th, for the Latino Gay Pride Festival, be sure and buy drinks at the bar (as if I had to tell you!) because IGRA volunteers will be the staff and IGRA gets half the net profits. Two valued members of IGRA died recently. Jorge Ramirez was a Judge and Arena Director and performed both duties often at BigHorn Rodeos. Bob Pimentel was an IGRA President and a Rodeo Director many times. Bob’s partner and family have requested that donations be made to the recently re-named IGRA Bob Pimentel Rodeo Crisis Fund to help injured contestants. IGRA has set up a GoFundMe account for an Australian pro bull rider who is gay and who has been harassed both physically and verbally. The account is to bring him to the US to compete in an IGRA rodeo. If you’d like to contribute or read about him, go to GoFundMe.com and type in Joshua Goyne. IGRA followed our victory and received its 501(c)(3) status. Oklahoma City has cancelled their rodeo so BigHorn will now be IGRA Rodeo #500! Our RPC is already planning on capitalizing on that fact and has designed a special logo. The 2017 Finals Committee is soliciting nominations for Grand Marshal with a deadline of April 15th. Please contact me with suggestions and I will help with the nomination form. Lorry King Trustee [email protected]

Historian’s Update I can’t tell you how happy I am that we will be having a Big Horn Rodeo this year. Our 25 th year. We have only missed one in the past, 2001 I believe, and expect that this one will be the best we have in the last few years. We will be the last Rodeo before IGRA Finals and have a fabulous and experienced team putting it together. I have been collecting action pictures of our Rodeos from the past couple of years, but would like to have more from the earlier days. If you have photos please send them to me and be sure you include the year and if possible the names of the people in the photo, the event or occasion and at least the year so that I may archive them and possibly have them incorporated in various displays I plan to put together. I have also received some memorabilia in the form of pins from past Rodeos and events and am working on a means of displaying them. I have also put together a poster size sign to be displayed on an easel to be placed near the entrance of the locations we have events that show the NRGA in April 2017 Newsletter

Page 11 of 45 action, Rodeo events, Camp Competitions, Pride Parades and events just for fun in order that people coming to our events have a quick pic’ as to who we are. I will have this in our next Newsletter. The History of our NGRA is dependent on our actions and support today. We have a fabulous Newsletter, probably the best we have ever had. You don’t have to be an active member to contribute to it. If you have stories to tell, tell them to us. You don’t need to have an office or title, all you need to have is a tale to tell us, and exaggeration is encouraged as that makes a good Cowboy and Cowgirl Story. Hope to hear from you. David C Wright Historian and Story Teller [email protected]

From Your Volunteer Coordinator As you must know by now BigHorn is back in September. Our Rodeo Director, Chris Due, and his Assistant Rodeo Director, Brenda Lee Luce-Alday, are working hard to make this a spectacular, fun rodeo and you have a very important part to play in this. RPC meetings are happening and if you wish to join the committee get in touch with either of them to find out details. You know it will not happen without you so if you have volunteered before and would like to be involved again just let me know. If you want to know more about what would be involved just ask me. Click the link below. If you can’t volunteer just be sure to put the dates in your diary and come along. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Happy Easter to you all. Well, this year BigHorn Rodeo is not only celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the 1st BigHorn Rodeo being put on by NGRA but we are also the 500 th IGRA Sanctioned rodeo!!!! This is huge! So many people are planning on traveling from near and far and cannot wait to see what we, as the Nevada Gay Rodeo Association, put on. Our wonderful Rodeo Director, Chris Due and ever fabulous Assistant Rodeo Director, Brenda Alday will be reaching out, I am sure, for help with lots of things, as will our Volunteer Coordinator, Carolyn Jones. However, if you are wondering what you can do now to help put on a great rodeo, wonder no more! Come help us raise money to put this on. We love hearing new ideas, we love having new people at shows to help. Come to a fundraising meeting and speak your mind, or email me personally and I will make sure you are heard. Come to the shows and functions and let us show our community here in Las Vegas and all over the IGRA circuit that we love the country western lifestyle and we love rodeo! People have talked about getting together to do things that do not involve drag. I would love that! However, let us get together, talk it out, plan it and, most importantly, DO IT!!! I know pool season is coming up and some of us have pools and some do not but maybe someone will be willing to open their home for a pool party and BBQ. Do people like to bowl? Let's go bowling. We need to get these ideas in the open, have a good communication between all aspects of the organization and come together like the family I know we are. I am planning on representing NGRA in October and compete for the title of Miss IGRA 2018. I need your help. One of the requirements is to raise money for IGRA and a 501(c)(3). NGRA is the 501(c)(3) that Jason and I chose for our 2nd Annual MuMu Party which is June 17th at Flex Cocktail Lounge, with the show starting at 9pm. We will have a contest for the Prettiest, Ugliest and Most Creative MuMu. I hope each and every one of you wears a MuMu and use this night to relax, have fun, enjoy each other’s company and raise money for NGRA. As always, email me, [email protected], and I will make sure you are heard. I have included some photos I have from the month. I hope to be taking a picture with you soon.
