To ALL 8th Graders You’re Invited!!! 8th Grade Celebration June 2nd It’s a FUN night to celebrate YOU and the accomplishment of finishing middle school!

Testing Dates Just a reminder, testing will occur during the month of May. Please ensure your student has enough rest and a good breakfast in the morning. Also, attendance is very important. We want our students to have every opportunity to be successful. Chehalis Middle School page 2

This event is FREE and open to ALL 8th graders of Chehalis Middle School.

Spring Testing As you may know, this spring we will test our 6th-8th grade students in Math and English-Language Arts using the Smarter Balanced Test (sometimes called SBAC for Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium). This test was designed to give us important information about what our students know and are able to do. Our 8th grade students will still be tested on the MSP Science assessment. We will start this testing in May. The SBAC is a very different test from the previous MSP or HSPE in the following ways:  It is a Computer Adaptive Test. This means that when a student gets a question wrong, the next question will be an easier one. If the student gets a question right, the next question will be a harder one. This makes the test shorter and more tailored to the student.  The test measures the student’s skills based on our new Washington State Learning Standards. These standards are more challenging, requiring students to think at a deeper level and explain their thinking.  The end-of-year assessments also will provide families with a clear indication of how well their children are progressing toward mastering the academic knowledge and skills necessary for college and career readiness.

ATTENTION 7TH GRADERS We are looking for 7th graders to be CATS leaders next year. What is CATS? CATS stands for Creating A Terrific School. It is an opportunity for incoming 6th graders to connect with 8th graders next school year. You will have fun giving tours of the school and showing 6th graders how awesome it is to be a CMS Wildcat!!! Applications are available from your counselor and Mrs. Walters.

March Madness Can Food Drive!!! March 20—24th Support our local food bank by sending in can food with your student! This will be a first period competition. The class with the most food per student wins! Chehalis Middle School page 3

Congratulations!!! On February 24th, the Symphonic Band and Jazz Band performed at the Warner Pacific Band Festival. Each band plays separate sets of music adjudication. The scores are then combined. The top three bands are awarded a plaque. Out of seven schools in the morning session, Chehalis scored second! The director of the festival even posted a clip of the Symphonic Bank on the Oregon Band Director’s Facebook Page for approximately 800 band directors to see. Chehalis is famous!

Next Year Registration In the weeks following Spring Break your counselors will once again be opening up our online schedule requesting. Like last year you will be able to log onto your Skyward account and select which classes you would most like to take during the 2017-18 school year. These selections dictate how we build the schedule so get your requests in. Make sure you are listening for info on when/where to get help signing up, as well as what other resources will be available to students and parents as we prepare for the next school year. Please fill out the paper copy as well so we can be doubly sure to place you accurately.

We will again be meeting with incoming 6th graders to go over online schedule requesting and answering any questions they may have regarding the transition into the middle school.

The Future Me

“The Future Me” career exploration event will be taking place on March 31st at Centralia College. We look forward to all 7th and 8th grade students joining us for this event to learn more about who they want to become in the future. There will be a variety of careers and topic areas being offered to enhance our Chehalis Middle School students’ experience and knowledge of the opportunities ahead of them. We appreciate Centralia College opening their doors to our students!

Don’t forget to turn in your College Bound Scholarship applications as soon as possible to your counselor.

Cell Phones Cell phones have made it easy for all of us to keep in touch with each other. However, during class time a ringing cell phone is a distraction to the entire class. Student cell phones are to be turned off during class time unless the teacher approves it for a classroom activity. They are confiscated until after school if they ring or a student uses the phone

during class. If you need to get in touch with your student, please call the middle school office at 807-7230, and we will get a message out to your student. Thank you!

No Cell Phone use during class time!

“Check Out” the exciting things that are happening in the library.

A Big THANK YOU!!! Our Spring Book Fair was a HUGE success!!!

Thank you to all the students and parents who purchased items to help support our school! We were able to put new books in all Language Arts classes and into the library!!!

Reading and How to Love it! Getting your student to read can be a challenge, especially if the student doesn’t like books. In order for a student to successfully navigate the upcoming tests, high school and college classes, there needs to be the ability to read and understand the text. Reading is important! Here are some suggestions to help your student cultivate a love for reading.

If your student doesn’t like to read, start with types of books that are similar to the types of movies or shows they like to watch. Start with a book that has been made into a movie, read the book, then watch the movie!

Provide opportunities to read. As a family, each pick out a book and have a time where you all sit and read. Middle schoolers are still learning by example. If they see you read, they’ll be more apt to read.

Start a book club with your child and their friends. Reading as a group provides a great dynamic in the fact that different people can read the same thing, yet get something different out of it. A book club also creates an environment of discussion that allows students to share their thoughts and understanding of a passage in a book. We have some great book that would work wonderfully as a book club book. Check out the Scholastic Book website for ideas as well.

If you would like suggestions on books for middle schoolers, please feel free to contact Mrs. Walters ([email protected]) or Mrs. Moon ([email protected]) in the CMS library.

Get YOUR newsletter ONLINE The newsletter is available online at www.chehalisschools.org/cms. If you would still prefer to receive a newsletter in the mail, please call 807-7230, to request a home delivery.
