Corporate Center Pasadena NEWS Pasadena turning parking lots into parks

Even the forbidding blacktop of South Lake Avenue can be livened with spots of green. That was the message behind Friday's "National Park(ing) Day," where two parking spots in front of Corporate Center on South Lake Avenue were transformed in to mini urban parks, complete with drought-tolerant plants to dramatize the message about water conservation. The event was the result of a partnership between Corporate Center Pasadena, CB Richard Ellis Inc. and ValleyCrest Landscape Maintenance. The South Lake Avenue spaces were among 10 landscaped parking spots installed across the country, including in Los Angeles, Santa Monica and Laguna Beach.

Corporate Center Pasadena NEWS Corporate Center Pasadena Kitchen Inspired by the classic French onion soup topped with croutons and bubbly Gruyère cheese, our version also includes mushrooms. This soup is sure to satisfy hearty appetites. You will probably have some bread cubes left over. Reserve them for another use; they can be toasted in the oven and used as a crunchy garnish for salads. Ingredients: 3 Tbs. olive oil 1 lb. yellow onions, thinly sliced 1 carrot, peeled and thinly sliced 1 celery stalk, thinly sliced 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1/4 cup plus 1 Tbs. Marsala wine 1 3/4 lb. cremini mushrooms, brushed clean and thinly sliced 1 bay leaf 7 cups low-sodium chicken stock Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste 2 Tbs. chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley 1 tsp. fresh lemon juice 1 country-style loaf, crusts removed, bread cut into 1/2-inch cubes 6 oz. Gruyère cheese, shredded Directions: In a 5 1/2-quart Dutch oven over medium heat, warm the olive oil. Add the onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft and caramelized, 25 to 30 minutes. Add the carrot, celery and garlic and cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are soft, about 6 minutes. Add the 1/4 cup Marsala and cook until evaporated, about 2 minutes. Add the mushrooms and cook until soft and the liquid evaporates, about 15 minutes. Add the bay leaf and stock, increase the heat to high and bring just to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium and simmer for 20 to 25 minutes. Season the soup with salt and pepper. Remove the bay leaf and discard. Working in batches, puree the soup in a blender until smooth. Add 1 Tbs. of the parsley, the lemon juice and the 1 Tbs. Marsala and stir to combine. Preheat a broiler: Place 6 ovenproof soup bowls on a baking sheet and ladle about 1 1/2 cups soup into each bowl. Top each with 4 or 5 bread cubes and sprinkle with about 1/4 cup cheese. Broil until the bread is lightly toasted and the cheese is bubbly and golden brown, 5 to 6 minutes. Sprinkle each serving with 1/2 tsp. parsley and serve immediately.

Pasadena Playhouse BABY IT'S YOU Written by Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux Directed by Floyd Mutrux November 6 – December 13, 2009 A world premiere musical! Overflowing with the greatest songs of the years immediately preceding the British Invasion, BABY IT’S YOU! tells the remarkable and littleknown story of Florence Greenberg, as she took on the male-dominated music establishment and revolutionized pop music. Greenberg’s Scepter Records influenced the most important movements in music to come – The Beatles, Motown, even folk-rock. BABY IT’S YOU! is the intriguing story of how classic records like “Baby, It’s You,” “Soldier Boy,” “He’s So Fine,” “Dedicated to the One I Love,” “Tonight’s the Night,” “Twist and Shout,” and many others came to be made, and is the story of one woman’s triumph in a male-dominated world. Corporate Center Pasadena NEWS Bungalow Heaven in Pasadena Named One of America's Top Ten Neighborhoods Pasadena’s Bungalow Heaven landmark district has been designated one of the 10 great places in the America. In making the announcement, the American Planning Association cited the large number of significantly important historic homes as well as collaborative efforts between neighborhood residents and the city of Pasadena for restoring, protecting and maintaining Bungalow Heaven’s unique character and sense of place.

“Bungalow Heaven demonstrates how historic neighborhoods have an enduring appeal, especially in a city like Pasadena where there is a strong commitment to history preservation and the early 20th century Arts and Crafts movement,” said Vice Mayor Victor Gordo, whose district partially encompasses Bungalow Heaven. “Residents throughout Pasadena have invested years and years of work to protect their neighborhoods, and it is a testament to those first dedicated residents of Bungalow Heaven.” APA’s annual Great Places in America program exemplifies exceptional character and highlights the role planners and planning play in creating communities of lasting value. Most of the home-building in Bungalow Heaven took place between 1905 and 1920. About 70 percent of the 1,100 single-family homes are bungalows from the Arts and Crafts period and no two are exactly alike.
