DEXTER "What's Mine..." FADE IN: CLOSE ON DEXTER Calm, but full of anticipation. DEXTER (V.O.) We all have needs. EXT. STREET - MIAMI, FL - EVENING Dexter's POV, looking out his car window as he drives down a busy Miami street. It's a balmy Florida night, the beautiful people dining out on romantic restaurant patios and waiting on long lines outside clubs in their skimpy couture best. DEXTER (V.O.) We need oxygen to breathe. ON A HANDSOME COUPLE taking in the night air as they walk down the popular street. INT. DEXTER'S HOUSE - EVENING - INTERCUT RITA, ASTOR and CODY are eating dinner, a baby monitor on the table near Rita. Cody suddenly has a coughing fit. Rita pats him on the back, telling him to breathe. Cody sucks in air, recovering. DEXTER (V.O.) We need food to nourish us. MIAMI STREET - ON A GROUP OF GIRLS eating their dinners while simultaneously texting and holding four separate conversations with each other. DEXTER'S HOUSE - Rita and the kids still eating dinner, enjoying each other. DEXTER (V.O.) We need love to sustain us. MIAMI STREET - ON A YOUNG GAY COUPLE canoodling on a bench. DEXTER'S HOUSE - Rita and the kids watch TV. Cody is in Rita's lap, her arms wrapped around him, while Astor is beside her, her head on Rita's shoulder. DEXTER (V.O.) At least that's what they tell me. (MORE)

"What's Mine..." DEXTER (V.O.) (CONT.) What I need, they don't teach you about in school.

INT. DEXTER'S CAR - MOVING - EVENING Dexter is in his killing outfit. DEXTER (V.O.) Funny how one base act can change the rest of your life. Even funnier it's not the base act that first comes to mind. Dexter looks in his rear view mirror and sees the baby car seat attached to the back seat. DEXTER (V.O.) I have sex with Rita one night and nine months later, a new person is here, relying on me, completely at my mercy, with my eyes and Rita's smile... I'm the first to be surprised this new development has curiously informed my hunting. CLOSE ON a picture of a woman on Dexter's dashboard. DEXTER (V.O.) Helen Prospect. Midwife and Baby Broker. Dexter pulls the car over, now in a suburban neighborhood. He takes a last look at the picture, moving it to his bag, then exits the car. EXT. MIAMI NEIGHBORHOOD - EVENING Dexter makes his way to Helen's house. DEXTER (V.O.) A month ago, a crackhead comes into the precinct claiming a woman killed her baby. With no record of either a birth or any prenatal care, her drug-addict cries went unheard. Dexter is at the back door, working his way in. DEXTER (V.O.) But I listened. One quick trip to her shelter of choice, a few conversations later, and I found Helen, "Angel to the Disenfranchised."

INT. HELEN PROSPECT'S HOUSE - EVENING Dexter is inside and quietly making his way through the house. DEXTER (V.O.) In the past two years she delivered nine off-the-record babies of drug addicts and homeless promising adoption, only to sell the babies to the highest bidder. Five of those babies made it to the loving arms of the flesh trade, the rest Helen disposed of. If anyone were to fit Harry's code, she does. Dexter slinks up behind Helen reclining on the couch. readies his syringe.

DEXTER (V.O.) Tonight's the night. Just as Dexter is about to plunge the needle into her neck, he notices a pool of dark liquid on the blanket covering her. He'd recognize that liquid anywhere. Dexter cautiously comes around the couch to look at Helen who, to his dismay, is unmistakably dead, her throat slit, her glassy eyes staring at the ceiling. DEXTER (V.O.) (thrown) This isn't in Harry's play book. Shit. Dexter stares at Helen, pissed. Before he can look any closer he hears movement outside. A nosy neighbor is all he needs right now. Dexter beats it out of there. INT. DEXTER'S CAR - EVENING Dexter sits in his car, collecting himself. DEXTER (V.O.) What the hell just happened? Could this be a coincidence? Is that even possible? After a beat he turns the car over and drives off. INT. DEXTER'S HOUSE - NIGHT Dexter enters the house, back in his work clothes. He finds Rita and the kids watching TV, the BABY playing in his crib next to them. Rita looks up, surprised to see her husband home.

DEXTER

"What's Mine..." RITA Hey, Dexter. I didn't expect you home so early. DEXTER Yeah, me either. RITA Something happen with guys' night? DEXTER Just wrapped up early.

Dexter leans in, gives Rita a kiss, then greets his kids. DEXTER Hey, guys. ASTOR/CODY Hi, Dexter. Dexter goes to his baby, looks in on him. DEXTER (to Rita) Okay if I pick him up? RITA (smiling) He's been asleep all evening, just woke up. I think he was waiting for his dad to get home. Dexter takes his new baby in his arms. He holds him close, feeling his warm body against his own. He walks the baby around a little, away from Rita and the kids. DEXTER Hey, Harrison. Dexter puts his ear to his baby's chest, listening to the tiny heartbeat. DEXTER Had a rough night. better.

Harrison gurgles at him. Dexter kisses his head, stares at him, in awe. Astor approaches. ASTOR Harrison almost said a word today. Really?

DEXTER What did he almost say?

"What's Mine..."

ASTOR Frog. DEXTER What did he actually say? ASTOR Blerg. Dexter smiles. So does Astor. It's a nice moment. She pushes a piece of her hair behind her ear and Dexter notices a bracelet on her right wrist. DEXTER Nice jewelry. Mom get that for you? No.

ASTOR I found it. DEXTER

It's pretty. ASTOR Thanks. Their conversation is interrupted by Dexter's cell ringing, he's been expecting the call. He hands Harrison over to Astor, who places him back in his crib. Dexter picks up. DEXTER (into cell) Morgan. Be right there. INT. HELEN PROSPECT'S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM/KITCHEN - NIGHT Dexter enters the crime scene he left only hours before. It's crawling with police now taking pictures, dusting countertops, rifling through drawers. Helen is still on the couch. Leaning over her is Dexter's sister DEBRA, who greets Dexter with a barely contained glee. DEBRA Pretty bloody, huh?

Hey, Dex.

DEXTER Yeah... You seem oddly giddy for a murder scene. DEBRA LaGuerta assigned her to me. lead detective on this one. Your first.

DEXTER Congratulations.

Dexter moves over to the body. He now gets a good look at what he couldn't before in the dark. As he inspects: DEXTER Who called it in? DEBRA Neighbor to the west. Helen, here, apparently had a habit of leaving her gate open which banged in the wind. He came over to complain, when she didn't answer the door, he poked his head in the window, got a fucking eyeful of throat slit. DEXTER (fishing) Did he see anything else? DEBRA Nothing useful. Dexter continues to inspect as Debra moves off to the KITCHEN Where she finds SGT. ANGEL BATISTA and DETECTIVE JOEY QUINN in a conversation. Forensic Techs process the kitchen around them. Batista and Quinn turn to Debra when she enters. DEBRA What do we got? Batista smiles at her. BATISTA Very official, mija. Thanks.

DEBRA I'm trying it out.

Quinn rolls his eyes a little, but responds. QUINN Looks like we found the murder weapon. Quinn holds up a baggie with a bloody butcher knife in it. QUINN No visible prints or fibers, but maybe the lab can find something. VINCE MASUKA enters, as if on cue.

DEXTER

"What's Mine..." MASUKA If there's something to be found, "The Lab" will find it. (to Debra) How about we go out and celebrate after we're done here? You must have a lot of unexpressed joyful energy following your first lead case. I can help you with that.

DEBRA How will you help me with your two broken hands and dislocated jaw? MASUKA What are you talking about? I don't -(gets it, back on point) Offer rescinded. Prelim says she was beaten and raped, then her throat was cut and she bled out. DEBRA This chick can't catch a break, can she? Debra notices Masuka squirming slightly, like he has an itch he's not scratching. DEBRA What? What?

MASUKA Nothing.

Masuka exits back to the Living Room. BATISTA (leading) So what next, Detective Morgan? Right.

DEBRA Any theories so far?

QUINN (dry) Yeah. Someone killed her. DEBRA Wow, Quinn. I think you may have cracked it. I'm gonna put in for your commendation as soon as I get back to the precinct.

DEXTER

"What's Mine..."

QUINN Make sure they know it's Quinn with two N's. DEBRA (amused) Yeah, how about before that, you go talk to the brother. He was the last call on Helen's cell. Here's his address. Debra hands Quinn a piece of paper.

He takes it and leaves.

DEBRA Angel -BATISTA Check in with the canvas? DEBRA Thanks. Batista gets on his cell phone as Debra exits back to the LIVING ROOM Where Dexter is still intently photographing the body. approaches him. DEBRA Dex. Dexter doesn't hear her.

He's in his head.

DEBRA (louder) Dexter. He snaps out of it. DEXTER Yeah? DEBRA Any special murderer insight yet? DEXTER (V.O.) I wouldn't have done it this way. DEXTER There are no hesitation marks on her throat. It's one smooth, quick and brutal slice. She bled out almost instantly.

DEBRA So Helen's probably not our killer's first? DEXTER Hard to say. He could have practiced on animals. Or he could have medical experience. DEBRA Thanks, Dex. Debra pulls out her phone and moves off. Dexter goes back to the body. He's frustrated. He doesn't notice Masuka eyeing him strangely, like he wants to ask him something. Dexter looks up, Masuka opens his mouth, then quickly walks away. Dexter barely registers, he's got only one thing on his mind. DEXTER (V.O.) She should have been mine. INT. POLICE STATION - DEXTER'S LAB - NIGHT - LATER Dexter is at his desk, on his computer. He's sifting through police files, fishing for his next target. It's not going well. DEXTER (V.O.) (on a mug shot) Marco Gutierrez. Two counts armed robbery and first degree murder... (reading file) ... stemming from death during commission of a crime. Marco didn't pull the trigger. Congratulations, you live to fight another day. Dexter scrolls to another mug shot and file. DEXTER (V.O.) Darlene Bishop. Heroin possession, attempted murder of her husband. No points for attempting. Suddenly Debra marches into Dexter's Lab. It's a surprise for both of them that either is still there. Dexter quickly closes the screen. DEBRA Jesus. Dexter. What the fuck are you still doing here?

DEXTER

"What's Mine..."

DEXTER Just finishing up some paperwork. What are you doing here? More specifically, what are you doing in my office? DEBRA I was just gonna grab the blood spatter report. DEXTER I'm not done with it yet. DEBRA Yeah, well, didn't think you'd mind if I just took a peek. Help a sister out... DEXTER I'll give it to you as soon as I'm done. I promise. Debra eyes her brother for a moment. DEBRA Don't you have a new baby to get home to? (before he can respond) You know what, scratch that. I need you for a late night pow wow. If you can swing it. (off his look) I could really use your brain. Dexter checks his watch. Debra looks at him, hopeful. He wants to get to the bottom of the murder as much as she does, for his own reasons. Sure.

DEXTER I can swing a half an hour.

EXT. TACO STAND - MIAMI,FL - NIGHT Dexter and Debra sit outside the small stand at a table, discussing the case over tacos. DEBRA The murder doesn't seem random. Whoever did it really took his time on her. DEXTER That doesn't always mean personal.

DEXTER

"What's Mine..."

DEBRA Yeah, but beatings that bad usually indicate some connection to the victim. (off his look) What are you thinking? DEXTER He left her uncovered, with no remorse. That would seem to say he didn't have a connection to her. Did you come up with anything on previous victims? DEBRA Not yet. I feel like there's something we're missing. DEXTER (V.O.) There is. But I can't share that tidbit with you. Sorry, Deb. DEXTER What about the brother? DEBRA Nada. He was across town at the time and has no idea why someone would want to hurt his sister. No one does. I can't find more than a parking ticket on her. She volunteered at homeless shelters, clinics... Woman was a fucking saint. Masuka better come up with some trace or I'm screwed. DEXTER (V.O.) No trace... This was too organized to be a revenge killing by one of Helen's wronged parents. Druggies and homeless don't generally execute well thought out break-in/murders. Debra is looking at Dexter expectantly. to say something so he comes up with:

DEXTER Maybe it was a premeditated murder, but for personal reasons not directly related to Helen. DEBRA Like she was the substitute?

DEXTER

"What's Mine..." DEXTER The murder would still look like personal rage, but once done, he'd have none of the remorse. DEBRA (mulling it over) So Helen was just a random victim. DEXTER (V.O.) No. She was definitely chosen for a reason. But was it the same reason I chose her? DEXTER Maybe.

Debra doesn't seem entirely convinced, but with no other theories, she decides to go with it. DEBRA It's a start. Thanks, Dex. Off Dexter, knowing he just led his sister in the wrong direction, but what choice did he have... INT. POLICE STATION - BULLPEN - NEXT DAY Debra is at her desk, files and pictures spread out on the desktop. She's finishing up a phone call. DEBRA (into phone, disappointed) Okay, thanks. Debra bangs the phone down. DEBRA (to herself) Fuck! Quinn looks up from his desk. QUINN Nothing in her transactions? DEBRA It's like her killer fucking floated in on a cloud and floated out. No red flags in her last movements or transactions. No similar M.O.'s in the past five years. Nothing from trace. He's a goddamn ghost.

QUINN We'll get him, Morgan. Guy doesn't know what he's up against. Who's leading the charge. But he will. DEBRA That almost sounded like you meant it. Quinn smiles at her. Debra's touched by his support. flashes him a grateful smile then goes back to work.

INT. POLICE STATION - DEXTER'S LAB - DAY Dexter watches from his office as Debra gets back on the phone. DEXTER (V.O.) Deb's frustrated. So am I. Dexter returns to looking at the crime scene photos. Suddenly, Masuka comes into Dexter's office and closes the door behind him. He's staring at Dexter with that odd look again. Dexter doesn't have time for him. DEXTER (obviously distracted) What's up, Vince? A beat, Masuka wants to say something, but doesn't. hands over a report instead. MASUKA No foreign DNA at the scene. Helen's.

Dexter takes the report and Masuka leaves. Dexter then returns to the blood spatter pictures from the crime scene. He doesn't get very far before he sees, out in the bullpen, LT. MARIA LAGUERTA and a YOUNG WOMAN come marching out of an interrogation room. LaGuerta hands the woman off to another officer who leads her away. Dexter, ever curious, grabs his blood spatter report and exits into the bullpen, crossing to LaGuerta's office. INT. POLICE STATION - LAGUERTA'S OFFICE - DAY Dexter catches LaGuerta as she's sitting down behind her desk. She looks aggravated. LAGUERTA (noticing him) Dexter. What can I do for you?

DEXTER

"What's Mine..." DEXTER Blood spatter on Helen Prospect indicates she was lying down when her throat was cut. No signs of a struggle, so she may have already been unconscious.

Dexter hands her the report. LAGUERTA (distracted) Alright, thanks. DEXTER Everything okay? LAGUERTA Not really. Ever have one of those cases you just couldn't get your head around? DEXTER (no) Sure. LAGUERTA (referring to a file) Penny Douglas. She was a nanny. Two days ago, she's watching a family's two-year-old when he winds up in the pool, drowned. Penny claims she went into the house for a drink, was watching Linus through the kitchen blinds and got distracted by a phone call. By the time she came back out, he was at the bottom of the pool. DEXTER You don't believe her. LAGUERTA I can't detect an ounce of genuine remorse from her. I don't know, something's off about this girl. But I don't have anything to hold her on except my gut. DEXTER (V.O.) A killer nanny. Could my luck have turned around so quickly? Before Dexter can actually respond, his cell rings.

DEXTER

"What's Mine..." DEXTER (to LaGuerta) Excuse me.

Dexter moves back out to: INT. POLICE STATION - BULLPEN - DAY He doesn't recognize the number but answers anyway. DEXTER (into cell) Dexter Morgan. PRINCIPAL HILL'S VOICE (over cell) Mr. Morgan. Hello, I'm the Principal at your daughter Astor's middle school. I'm sorry to bother you at work but I couldn't reach your wife and I'm afraid we have a situation here. Would you be able to come in and talk today? As soon as possible. Uh, sure.

DEXTER I'll be right there.

INT. ASTOR'S SCHOOL - PRINCIPAL HILL'S OFFICE - DAY Dexter and Astor both sit across the desk from Principal Hill. PRINCIPAL HILL It seems that Astor ended up with another student's sweater in her book bag, and that student is very upset. Dexter looks at Astor. PRINCIPAL HILL This student tried to get her sweater back, but I'm told Astor refused to even acknowledge she had it until the girl came to me and I intervened. DEXTER Astor, is this true? She doesn't answer. PRINCIPAL HILL Now, this is the first time I've had to bring Astor in to my office for (MORE)

PRINCIPAL HILL (CONT.) such a thing, so there won't be any harsh punishment, but I did feel it important to let you know. As the Principal talks on, we -FLASHBACK TO: INT. DEXTER'S CHILDHOOD BEDROOM - DAY YOUNG DEXTER (12) is in his room, throwing a baseball against the wall, when HARRY, his adoptive father, comes in. Harry goes straight to a backpack sitting on Dexter's bed. HARRY I saw you come in with this backpack today. Where did it come from? YOUNG DEXTER That's my backpack. HARRY Where did you get it? YOUNG DEXTER I found it. Harry looks disappointed. HARRY You found it. Where? YOUNG DEXTER I don't know. Around. Dexter looks away, but Harry keeps his eyes on him. HARRY Why did you take it, son? Dexter knows he can't hide anything from his father. YOUNG DEXTER I wanted it. Harry sits down on the bed next to Dexter. HARRY I want you to listen to me, Dexter. We both know you're... different enough. This stealing thing... It will just draw unnecessary attention to you.

DEXTER

"What's Mine..."

Dexter looks at his father. HARRY There are rules to what's okay and what's not. Things belong to people, they're not there just for your amusement when you feel like taking them. There's a law of ownership and a social code of things earned. YOUNG DEXTER (getting it) I didn't earn the backpack. HARRY You just took it without thinking of the person you were taking it from. Do you understand, Dexter? ASTOR (O.S.) Dexter? BACK ON: INT. ASTOR'S SCHOOL - PRINCIPAL HILL'S OFFICE - DAY Dexter turns to see Astor looking at him quizzically. He smiles at her to assure her he's not mad, then turns to the Principal. DEXTER Thank you, Principal Hill. I'll talk to Astor, make sure this doesn't happen again. Dexter shakes the Principal's hand and he and Astor exit. INT. ASTOR'S SCHOOL - HALLWAY - CONTINUOUS As Dexter and Astor walk back to her classroom... DEXTER You didn't just find that bracelet, either, did you? Astor shakes her head. DEXTER How many things have you stolen? This gets Astor to finally talk. ASTOR I didn't steal anything. (MORE)

DEXTER

"What's Mine..."

ASTOR (CONT.) Those kids just left those things around. They didn't even miss them until they saw me with them. DEXTER So that makes it okay? ASTOR It's not stealing. Thinking of his own Harry lesson, one he's only now coming to fully understand as he's landed on the other side of it, Dexter tries to impart the lesson to Astor. Awkwardly. DEXTER Astor, things belong to people. (off her blank stare) You can't just take them because you feel like it. They have arrived at Astor's classroom. DEXTER Do you understand? Astor nods, then enters her class. Off Dexter, no idea if he made any impact at all. He's no Harry, that's for sure... INT. POLICE STATION - MEN'S ROOM - DAY Batista is washing up at the sink. Masuka enters, looks around. He makes sure there's no one else in the stalls, then approaches Batista. BATISTA You lose something? MASUKA (to himself) I'm afraid I got something, actually. BATISTA (didn't hear) What's that? MASUKA We're bros, right? Batista can tell this isn't going to be good. BATISTA (warily) Sure, Vince.

DEXTER

"What's Mine..."

19.

Batista tries to wrap it up and go, but Masuka stops him. MASUKA In that spirit, I need you to do me a solid. BATISTA You need a ride somewhere? moving? I'm your man.

MASUKA I need you to take a look at my nuts. Exactly the kind of thing Batista was afraid of. BATISTA (pretending he didn't hear) You need a ride? MASUKA Come on, dude. I could really use your help. (unbuckling his pants) I would owe you big. Just one look. BATISTA (stopping him) Whoa! Whoa, little man. Listen, I have never seen another man's cojones yet and I don't plan to start with yours. Masuka is floored by this. Never?

INT. POLICE STATION - BULLPEN/KITCHEN - DAY Dexter returns to the precinct with his signature box of donuts in hand, offering one to all who pass. He notices LaGuerta, in her office, angrily hang up her phone then storm through the bullpen into the kitchen. Seizing an opportunity, Dexter excuses himself from the detective currently foraging through the box and walks to the kitchen. Approaching LaGuerta with box open -DEXTER Bear Claw? What?

LAGUERTA No, thank you.

But she absently takes one anyway. DEXTER (re: her mood) The nanny? LAGUERTA I had to kick her. And then I had to tell that little boy's parents. DEXTER Sorry. You still have my report on the Prospect case? LAGUERTA Yeah, I haven't had a chance to look it over yet. DEXTER I need to make a couple adjustments. Mind if I take it back? LAGUERTA Knock yourself out. It's in my inbox. Just get it done and back to me by end of today. DEXTER Absolutely. Dexter leaves the donut box in the kitchen and moves to: INT. POLICE STATION - LAGUERTA'S OFFICE - DAY He moves to her inbox and finds his report. But instead of taking the file and leaving, Dexter searches for and finds the Penny Douglas file. He quickly looks through the file and lands on something. Off Dexter, forming a plan...

"What's Mine..."

21.

INT. POLICE STATION - RECORDS ROOM - DAY Dexter stands around the corner, eyeing the MALE CLERK manning the counter. The moment he sees the Clerk about to leave, he moves in. DEXTER (V.O.) (CONT.) She spent five years institutionalized and then her record was wiped clean. Dexter scrolls through more pages. DEXTER (V.O.) Her psychiatrist didn't recommend her release but was overruled by the judge. Penny still had psychotic tendencies, she said. Don't we all. Let's see if the good doctor was right. Dexter logs off and rushes out. INT. POLICE STATION - DEXTER'S LAB - NIGHT Dexter is at his computer, researching. lands on something.

After a beat he

ON HIS MONITOR: A 2004 college picture of Penny from Santa Barbara State College. Dexter does a local newspaper article search, years 2000-2004, and finds several stories about a toddler girl who drowned in her home pool, Penny was babysitting when it happened. DEXTER (V.O.) Different state, no charges filed, no record except journalistic. (reading) "I went into the house for a coke, was watching Mary through the blinds when I got distracted by a phone call. I came back out and she was at the bottom of the pool." You should get a new story, Penny. Three drowned kids, common denominator Miss Douglas. She's the one. Dexter shuts down his computer. DEXTER (V.O.) (excited) My Dark Passenger is in need of a playmate since the last was so unceremoniously called away. So much to do. Dexter moves off to get his ducks in a row, a spring in his step almost visible.

INT. PENNY DOUGLAS' APARTMENT - NIGHT Dexter, all geared up, slinks through Penny's apartment, almost bursting with anticipation. He hears the TV, makes his way to the living room, but it's empty. Confused, he moves to the bedroom and carefully slides open the door -Only to find Penny lying on her bed, eyes open, dead. Dexter is furious. He approaches Penny, notices her hair is wet. Then he notices there's foam at her mouth. Drowned.

DEXTER Fuck.

Dexter squeezes his eyes shut, rubbing his temples. believe this has happened again.

DEXTER (V.O.) By definition, a narcissistic sociopath thinks everything is about him, but I'm gonna go ahead and say this is about me. Dexter hurries out of the apartment. INT. DEXTER'S CAR - MOVING - NIGHT Dexter drives, using everything he's got to keep it together. DEXTER (V.O.) Someone is shadowing me. He knows who I am, and what I do. But worse, he knows how to figure out my targets and get to them before I do. Dexter stares at the road as he works it out. DEXTER (V.O.) Helen was beaten and raped. Like the children she sold almost certainly were. Penny was drowned. Some sort of poetic justice... But why my playmates? Dexter rubs his eyes, he doesn't like being in the dark. DEXTER (V.O.) Another fan. One more vigilante killer emulating the Dark Defender? I don't need this. Off Dexter, cock-blocked again...

INT. POLICE STATION - BULLPEN - MORNING Dexter drags in, looking less than his usually fit self. The bullpen is alive with activity, everyone working on Penny's case. Dexter feigns ignorance. DEXTER What's going on? Batista answers from his desk, in between phone calls. BATISTA That nanny LaGuerta brought in the other day... We just found her in her apartment. Drowned. DEXTER That's... ironic. BATISTA I guess, if you go in for that sort of thing. Sorry you got left out, but no blood. DEXTER I'll live. Dexter is visibly on edge. Batista notices, but misinterprets his colleague's discomfort. He moves over to Dexter, sympathetic. BATISTA I know what you're thinking. DEXTER You do? BATISTA How are we supposed to seek justice for this woman when she may have been responsible for a little boy's death. DEXTER That's... exactly what I was thinking. BATISTA You gotta put that aside. BATISTA (CONT.) Every tiny innocent face... You can't help but think of your own. Dexter is shocked to realize... Batista is right. DEXTER It's not right, taking a life so young... I don't know what I'd do if anything happened to Harrison. BATISTA Nothing's gonna happen to your little guy. He's got you looking out for him, right? Taking this in, Dexter walks off to is office. INT. POLICE STATION - BULLPEN - DAY - LATER Debra is at her desk looking through the two homicide files on Helen and Penny. She's poring over the details, comparing pictures, notes, etc. Something about these two cases, so close to each other... Masuka carefully approaches her. MASUKA Hey, Morgan. DEBRA (without looking up) You got results for me? MASUKA Uh, not yet. Debra continues her notes.

Masuka stands there.

DEBRA What do you want, Masuka? MASUKA (diving in) Okay, look, I'm getting desperate. I wouldn't ask if I had another option, but I need help. And you're one of the only people here with a heart. Debra looks up for the first time. She sees the agony in Masuka's face, feels his desperation. He's got her sympathy. DEBRA What is it?

MASUKA You're gonna want to yell at me, but believe me, it's not what it sounds like. DEBRA (wary) What is it? MASUKA Can you please take a look at my balls? Debra can't believe she got suckered in. DEBRA You gotta be fucking kidding me. MASUKA Remember, it's not what it sounds like -DEBRA Masuka, not in a million fucking years, even if Osama bin Laden were hiding under your left nut and I'd get credit for the bust, would I ever look at - what I can only assume are - your tiny misshapen balls. Masuka slinks away. Debra goes back to studying the photos of both victims. Something strikes her about a CU of Helen, she circles her mouth. She pulls out a CU of Penny and notes the same thing. Then she picks up on something else by each woman's ear. Debra makes a note on each picture and sits back, in shock. DEBRA (to herself) Holy fuck. She holds up the pictures, looking at the now circled small bald patch behind each woman's ear. DEBRA Did you rip their hair out as some sort of sick trophy?

Debra throws the pictures down on her desk and rushes off to confirm her theory. She almost mows Quinn down as she motors past him. DEBRA Watch out. Whoa.

QUINN Where's the fire?

As Debra moves off, Quinn passes Debra's desk and can't help but see the files sitting open. He takes a closer look, taking in Debra's notations and flags on the pictures. He realizes her breakthrough - that these two cases are connected. Off his look... INT. POLICE STATION - DEXTER'S LAB - DAY Dexter is working, trying to suppress his nerves. The beast has been caged for too long, he's got to find a way to let it out soon. There's a knock on his door. DEXTER Come in. It's Debra, all smiles. DEBRA Dex -She's about to launch into her theory when she notices Dexter's looking a little pale. DEBRA Hey, everything okay? DEXTER (deflecting) It's Astor. She got caught stealing the other day. I had to go in and talk to her principal about it. Debra is trying to be sympathetic, but she's too jazzed about her breakthrough to muster the concern. DEBRA Sucks for you. Guess that's fatherhood. DEXTER Yeah. (off her eager look) So what's up with you?

DEXTER

"What's Mine..." DEBRA I can connect my case with Angel's. DEXTER (shit) What do you mean? DEBRA Both Helen and Penny were incapacitated by some sort of toxin applied to their faces before they were killed. I noticed irritation around both of their mouths and nose. And get this. Behind both of their right ears, a small swatch of hair was ripped out. Like a killer's trophy or something.

Dexter takes this in. DEBRA So, what do you think? I've got to get tox confirmation before I present to LaGuerta, but the hair thing is unmistakable. They're connected, right? It's a fucking signature, it has to be. Dexter knows he has to be very careful how he responds. DEXTER (V.O.) He can't be brought in. It might put a serious damper on Dexter's fantasy fun world. DEXTER It's definitely a possibility. Debra reads her brother's reservation. DEBRA What? DEXTER It could be they're connected. Or Helen's hair could have been ripped out while her attacker was pummeling her face. Penny's could have been while her head was being held under water as she struggled. DEBRA (hurt) Why don't we see what tox has to say before we shit all over my theory.

POLICE STATION - KITCHEN - DAY Debra crosses in the b.g. to the elevators as Quinn, eyeing her, moves to the kitchen. He's pouring himself a cup of coffee when LaGuerta enters. She moves next to him and pours herself a cup. Silence for a beat, then: LAGUERTA How's your case coming? Good.

QUINN We're running down some leads.

Beat. LAGUERTA How's Morgan doing? QUINN She's fine. LAGUERTA (pointed) I mean how's she doing as lead? QUINN No complaints. LAGUERTA I've got one. I haven't heard a thing from you guys all day. What exactly are you doing? What "leads" are you running down? Quinn hesitates for a moment, but not long, as he withstands LaGuerta's stare down. QUINN We're looking into the possibility that our case and Batista's are connected. (off her surprise) Both victims may have been subdued with a chemical compound before they were killed.

LAGUERTA Are you running a tox screen? QUINN As we speak. LAGUERTA Is that it? QUINN We also might have found a signature. Both women had locks of their hair ripped out in the same spot behind their right ears. Quinn reaches out to LaGuerta's right ear, indicating the spot, then realizes the proximity is awkward and moves back. LaGuerta powers forward without missing a beat. LAGUERTA When were you planning on sharing this information with me? QUINN We wanted to run the tests first, make sure the knock-out drug was the same in each woman before presenting. LaGuerta's demeanor suddenly changes from stern to impressed. LAGUERTA Let me know the minute that test comes back. If it's true, it would be a major breakthrough. Good work, Quinn. Quinn immediately feels guilty. He knows he gave LaGuerta reason to believe they were his discoveries. He opens his mouth to correct her but doesn't get the chance. LaGuerta moves briskly off before he can say another word. Passing LaGuerta on her way out, Masuka enters the kitchen and approaches Quinn who's staring after her, feeling shittier by the second. Masuka takes a deep breath and starts in for the request. MASUKA Crazy day, huh?

Masuka turns right back around and exits. INT. POLICE STATION - BULLPEN - DAY Debra's back from the lab, working at her desk. marches up.

LAGUERTA What have you been doing, Morgan? DEBRA Uh, I was just in the lab -LaGuerta steamrolls over her. She wasn't really interested, it was more of a rhetorical question. LAGUERTA While you were spinning your wheels, Quinn made a connection between your murder and Angel's. We might have another serial on our hands, and Quinn could be on to his signature. So effective immediately, I'm assigning both cases to Sergeant Batista. You'll report to him. DEBRA (what the fuck!) Lieutenant -LAGUERTA If they are connected, it means they're the same case. (off her look) It's just policy, Morgan. Batista is the senior detective. We're not going to have a problem, are we? Debra swallows a boatload of humiliation and sucks it up. DEBRA No. LAGUERTA Good. LaGuerta, satisfied, walks off. Debra is furious. She sees Quinn across the bullpen and beelines for him. She grabs him and pulls him into the kitchen. INT. Rita is in the kitchen cooking dinner with one hand while rocking a cranky baby with the other. As he passes Cody on his way to the kitchen: DEXTER Hey, buddy. Cody is enraptured with his program.

IN THE KITCHEN Dexter gives Harrison, who continues to cry, a kiss on the head, takes him from Rita so she can stop juggling. RITA Thanks. DEXTER What's he need?

DEXTER I'll change him. Dexter starts to move off. RITA Actually, Dexter, I could really use your help with Astor. She's been hiding in her room all afternoon. I don't know what's been going on with her lately, but I can change Harrison if you'll do me a favor and talk to her? DEXTER Sure. Dexter hands Harrison back to Rita and moves to Astor's room. He knocks on the door, gets no answer. DEXTER Astor, it's Dexter. He tries the knob, it's locked. DEXTER Can I come in? Silence for a beat, then: ASTOR'S VOICE (through the door) No. DEXTER Why not? ASTOR'S VOICE I don't want you to get mad. That doesn't sound good. DEXTER (not sure how to respond) Uh. I won't get mad. ASTOR'S VOICE You promise?

DEXTER Yes. Dexter hears the door unlock and Astor opens it just enough for Dexter to enter. INT. DEXTER'S HOUSE - ASTOR'S ROOM - CONTINUOUS She closes the door behind him and Dexter sees the reason she's been hiding out. Astor is cradling a tiny kitten in her shirt. She looks at Dexter hopefully. ASTOR She's my new kitten, Jody. DEXTER (concerned) Where did she come from? Astor is silent. DEXTER Did you take her from another family? Astor is hugging the kitten tightly to her chest, as if she's afraid Dexter will take her away. DEXTER (V.O.) I never understood the devotion to animals. They're dirty, they're tremendous drains on your time, and they can't communicate with you. And yet, people love them. As if in response to his inner monologue: ASTOR I love her. DEXTER But she doesn't belong to you. This isn't like a sweater or a bracelet. You can't just steal pets, now. ASTOR I knew you wouldn't understand. I didn't steal her. She wanted to be with me. She's happy, look at her. (off his look) She does belong with me. I love her more. DEXTER How do you know that?

ASTOR Because no one could love her as much as I do. The determination in her young eyes brings Dexter back to: FLASHBACK TO: EXT. WOODS - DAY Harry and Teenage Dexter are hunting. They are moving quietly through the trees, searching for prey, when Dexter sees, in the distance, another boy getting into position to fire. Dexter looks to where the boy is aiming and sees a deer on the other side of some brush. The deer is much closer to the other boy, but before he can get his shot off, Dexter aims his rifle and shoots first. He nails the deer in the head, sending him down. The other boy looks over at Dexter, surprised and angry. He is about to bear down on Dexter, ready to challenge him, but when he sees the look in Dexter's eyes, he retreats. Dexter turns back to the deer, excited, the rush of the kill in his veins. Harry!

TEENAGE DEXTER Look! I got him!

Dexter rushes to the fallen animal. not pleased.

Harry slowly joins him,

HARRY I know you saw that other boy, Dexter. Dexter is distracted, barely listening. with his deer. One shot.

Rita stops when she sees Astor and Dexter, both looking totally caught. Her eyes move to Astor's shirt and she finally sees the kitten hidden in her daughter's arms. RITA (shocked) What is this? Neither Astor nor Dexter knows how to respond. RITA I can't believe this. Dexter, did you tell Astor she could have a kitten without discussing it with me? Dexter sees the look in Astor's eyes, they're begging him. He doesn't know what to do so he says: DEXTER Yeah, I did. I'm sorry. She came to me and I thought it would be okay. RITA (indignant) Well, it's not. Harrison has been sneezing and uncomfortable all afternoon. I think he's allergic. We can't keep it. ASTOR But, Mom -RITA End of discussion, Astor. It goes back to wherever you got it from tomorrow. (to Dexter, aside) We'll talk about this later. Right now, I still need you to take Harrison. But please, go wash your hands first. Dexter moves off to wash his hands. Astor continues petting her kitten, but a sly smile crosses her face, almost as if she's pleased she was found out. INT. DEXTER'S HOUSE - DINING ROOM - EVENING - LATER Dexter, Rita and the kids eat dinner in silence. Everyone is tense. All Dexter can think about is making his next kill. He looks around the table and feebly smiles.

"What's Mine..." DEXTER (V.O.) This isn't good. How am I going to get away again to finally satisfy the sadly neglected monster inside? I can't keep pretending to work late. Whatever his motivation, this Shadow is really screwing me.

Rita eyes Dexter, assuming his mood is due to their fight, which is the cause of her mood. Astor is angry at Rita and the baby. Cody is oblivious and happily eats. The silence goes on until Rita decides to break the tension. RITA Astor, I'm sorry if you feel -Astor silences her with a glare. RITA Okay. Later. Cody, honey, how was your day at school? CODY Okay. (through chewing) I miss Brady, though. RITA What happened to Brady? CODY I don't know. He just stopped coming to school. RITA Since when? CODY Last week. Ronnie said they moved, but Brady would have told me. We were supposed to be partners in the Young Scouts Troop. Rita looks at Dexter, trying to hide the worry in her eyes, their fight now out the window. Off Dexter's curiosity... INT. (off Dexter's look) I never saw anything, but there was just something about the way Brady looked at him... DEXTER You think his father did something to him? RITA I don't know. Coroner seems to think the trauma could have been caused by a fall, just as his father, Chester Hack, claimed. "Freak accident" Chester said. Are there such things? Dexter runs Chester's ID and finds that he works at a local strip club as a bouncer. As Dexter is printing out the strip club's address, Rita suddenly appears in the doorway. RITA (sleepily) Hey. Dexter immediately switches screens and deftly hides the printout. DEXTER Hey. RITA What are you up to? DEXTER Just couldn't sleep. surf the web. RITA Come back to bed.

DEBRA (into phone) I'm gonna need a list of every customer who purchased those chemicals in the last month. Yes, that's right. Quinn walks up to Debra's desk, stands over her, wanting to talk. Debra flashes him a look, she's on the phone, go away. He doesn't move. DEBRA That's great. Thank you for your help. Debra hangs up. DEBRA What the fuck do you want? QUINN We're still partners, aren't we? DEBRA Not if I had any say in the matter. QUINN I didn't mean to take credit for your theory. Or get you taken off lead. DEBRA Yeah, well, intentions don't mean squat sometimes. QUINN I'm trying here. DEBRA You're a little prick for letting LaGuerta think for even two seconds it was yours. DEXTER Tried to tell her she can't steal pets. But I have no idea what I'm doing, if I'm getting through to her. These are the parental moments where I'm at a total loss. DEBRA What I usually do when I'm at a total loss? Ask myself, what would Harry do? Dexter takes this in, then: DEXTER I heard what happened, by the way. I'm sorry. DEBRA Enough with everyone telling me how sorry they are. Fuck sorries. DEXTER Sorry. Debra glares, Dexter smiles. DEBRA It's probably my own damn fault for not being authoritative enough. Once there, Dexter turns around and spots Chester roaming the floor. A girl immediately sidles up to him. STRIPPER Hey, darling. How are you tonight? DEXTER Okay, thanks. He looks closely at the ring's design, then takes out a box from his bag. In the box is a BRAND NEW SMARTPHONE. DEXTER (V.O.) Desperate times... He turns it on and starts using the internet. DEXTER (V.O.) Not only am I a fan of all things cellular, these internet phones may be my salvation. Dexter navigates through documents and web pages, as if he were on his work computer. He finally lands on the coroner's pictures of Brady's head wound. Dexter uses his phone's functions to magnify one particular image. He compares the ring's design with the wound. They match. It's subtle, hard to detect unless looking for it, but it's there. DEXTER (V.O.) Sentimentality. The universe's great equalizer. Should have tossed the ring. Dexter takes out a small packet from his bag and swabs the ring with a sterile q-tip from the packet. Then he drips hydrogen peroxide onto the q-tip followed by phenolphthalein. The cotton turns pink. DEXTER (V.O.) Blood. Unless this ring was lying on the ground and Brady tripped and fell on it with just enough force to kill himself, he was beaten to death by dear old dad. (more reading) Maybe too close. Dexter pulls up older files on the Lowe family. DEXTER (V.O.) Reports in their childhood that Frank may have molested Randall when they were younger. Rumors that followed them into adulthood. Dexter looks up, it's all coming together now. DEXTER (V.O.) A lifelong obsession with one person, someone who lashed out himself from the abuse he endured, and I took the focus of that obsession away. Dexter pulls out the Helen Prospect and Penny Douglas files, takes out the pictures of their bodies, looks at them.

Happy hunting." As Dexter finishes reading the note, Debra rushes in ready to tell him her good news. She notices his expression. In a playful moment, she grabs the note from his hands.
