December 11, 2016 Childlike Faith “People were bringing little children to him in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, "Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it." And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.” Mark 10:13-15 We are so blessed at Wesley to have been entrusted with a great group of children. God has given us the opportunity and responsibility to bring these children to know Jesus through our teaching and example. During this season of Christmas, there are some special events that highlight the faith of our children as they share with us the joy of Christmas. This afternoon at 4:30 p.m. our youngest children’s group will present their Christmas play, “The Shiniest Star.” Then on Wednesday night at 6:15 p.m. our older children will present the annual Nativity Pageant. Through our children we are reminded of Jesus teaching his followers to receive the Kingdom of God like little children. While there are times in our faith journey when it is important to question, doubt, and search, there are other times when we should put down the clutter of our skepticism and simply receive with faith and joy the good news of God’s love for us in Jesus Christ. We can never fully understand the incarnation, how God became man, but we can open our hearts to the grace and truth Jesus offered us. And when we revisit our childlike faith, we will rediscover the wonder of God’s greatest gift and the beauty of this story. A FESTIVAL OF LESSONS AND CAROLS Sunday, December 11, 2016, 11:00 A.M. Featuring: Wesley Chancel and Youth Choirs This morning our 11:00 a.m. worship experience will be the traditional Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is a service of Christian worship celebrating the birth of Jesus that is traditionally followed at Christmas. The story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus is told in nine short Bible readings from Genesis, the prophetic books and the Gospels, interspersed with the singing of Christmas carols, and choral music.

The Apostles’ Creed Nelle Bordeaux I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Thy kingdom come; thy will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory; For ever. Amen.

Please stand as you are able. Immediately following each service a docent is available by the grand piano to share with you a brief history of this sanctuary and congregation. All music reprinted under OneLicense.net No. A-719387 and CCLI No. 11046193.

The Gift of Joy More than anything else, music speaks joy to our souls. The old Coca Cola jingle “I’d like to teach the world to sing” brings to mind pictures of people throughout the world singing joyfully with one another. While advertisers would have us believe that a bottle of Coke is all we need to find real joy, we know that the Gift of Joy can only come from the one who made us for Himself. Today we light the pink candle as a symbol of the Gift of Joy.

Usher Roses The roses worn by the ushers today were given in loving memory of Bob Farrow by his children and grandchildren.
