A Beisl serves local cuisine, hearty mother's kitchen of excellent, home made quality and very often huge portions. The service is friendly and fast. The Beisl is a typical Viennese institution, the pendant to the French Bistro, the English Pub, the Italian Trattoria, the New York Diner and the Bavarian Beer Cellar. "Wirtshaus" is the upgraded version for a Beisl.

GRIECHENBEISL One of Vienna's oldest restaurants with many small vaulted rooms, upstairs and downstairs, truly a piece of ancient Vienna. The first entry still preserved in the registers of the Municipality of Vienna dates from 1447, and it states that the house was sold for 550 pounds of pfennings. A tower with a steep saddled roof is the last remnant of the old city wall (about 1200), and it is, therefore, the most ancient building in Vienna.
