Fall 2017 Children’s Programming Baby Lapsit (Ages 0-17 months, Alternating Mondays 10:15-10:30):

Learning and a love for literacy is important at any age. Young minds will learn through language, stories, rhymes, and more. Babies sit on their parent’s laps throughout the program. A parent must accompany children during these sessions. Dates: Sept. 18 Oct. 16 Nov. 13 Oct. 2 Oct. 30 Nov. 27

Parachute Play (Ages 18 months-3 years, Alternating Mondays 10:30-10:50): A storytime geared for active toddlers. Stories, songs, rhymes and games with the parachute will inspire learning in little ones! Registration required. Dates: Sept. 11 Oct. 9 Nov. 6 Dec. 4 Sept. 25 Oct. 23 Nov. 20

Toddler Time (Ages 18 months-3 years, Thursday mornings 10:30-10:50):

Scavenger Hunts:

The library occassionally has scavenger hunts. Level of difficulty varies depending on a child’s age. Children receive a small prize for finding all the pictures on the scavenger hunt. Children can complete scavenger hunts whenever the library is open!

Little minds will learn, play, and explore with stories, fingerplays, and songs. Activities such as games, crafts, and freeplay will follow storytime. Teddy Bear Sleepover - Special Family Storytime (Ages 18 months to 5 years):

Come bring your favorite stuffed friend for their very own storytime and sleepover! We’ll read some bedtime stories, sing some songs, and tuck our friends in for a sleepover at the library. Maybe we can even catch our stuffed animals doing some silly things when the library lights go out! *Please make sure you bring a stuffed friend that you’ll be okay without over night. Date & Time: Thursday, Sept. 28 from 7:00-7:20 p.m. *Stuffed animal pickup Friday, Sept. 29 starting at 10 a.m.

Sign-up for a reading appointment with Arthur on select Saturdays throughout the summer! Appointments can be booked 10:00 - 1:30 for 20 minute slots for up to two children at a time. Children with or without reading issues benefit from reading to Arthur. Arthur is a certified therapy dog through Therapy Dogs International. Sign-Up at the Children’s Desk or call 262-673-8240 for available dates and times. Hurry, he books up fast!

Fall 2017 Children’s Programming 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program (All year long):

A great program to help encourage the love of reading from an early age! Upon registration, children receive a folder to help them count up to their 1,000 books before they enter Kindergarten! Children also receive prizes along the way to get to celebrate each 100 books read by stopping at the Children’s Desk.

Sept. is library card sign-up month!

Hartford Recreation After School Program (Wednesdays, Oct. 4-Dec. 20):

Weekly Wednesday activities after school at the Library 3:30-5:00. Activities rotate weekly but will feature movies, crafts, games, and LEGOs! Reading and study are always an option. Registration in the Hartford Recreation Center is NOT REQUIRED for participation.

Have your child stop by the Children’s Desk anytime during the month of Sept. to sign up for their very own library card! Children must be in at least Kindergarten to obtain a library card. Children who sign up for their own library card during the month of Sept. will get to sign their name on our Sept. sign-up display!

Taco Party (Wed. Oct. 4 from 3:30-4:30):

Banned Book in a Jar Game:

In honor of National Taco Day on Oct. 4, we’ll be having a taco party! Come make a taco craft, play some games, and more. No registration required.

Page-to-Stage Activities:

The Schauer Arts Center and the Jack Russell Memorial Library present special crafts and fun activities based on children’s stories! Children who attend can receive a copy of the book and ticket to the show while supplies last! No registration required. Dates & Books: Sat. Oct. 7 from 10:30-11:30: My Father’s Dragon Sat. Nov. 18 from 10:30-11:30: David Seebach’s Merry Magic Christmas Fri. Dec. 29 from 2:00-3:00: Willy Wonka Jr.

Downtown Trick-Or-Treat (Saturday, Oct. 28 12:30-2:00):

The Library will be partcipating in Hartford’s Downtown Trick-Or-Treat! Stop in at the library to grab some candy, make a few spooky crafts, and play some games! While the library’s event runs from 12:00-2:00, trick-or-treating downtown runs from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. No registration required.

Library LEGO Checkout Club (Wed. Nov. 1-Thurs. Nov. 30):

Help the Library build a GIANT tower of LEGOs again this holiday season! Whenever children check out at least one book, they will get the chance to add 3 LEGOs onto our ever-growing tower! Let’s see how tall it gets!! No registration required.

Geronimo Stilton Party (Wed. Nov. 15 from 3:30-4:30):

We’re having a party to celebrate our love of all things Geronimo Stilton! Come make a set of your very own mouse ears and play some games! Of course, it wouldn’t be a true Geronimo Stilton party without sampling some cheese too! No registration required.

Winter Reading Program (Dec. 4-Feb. 24):

Register at the Youth Desk to be a part of the Winter Reading Program! It’s a great way to keep youth (and adults) engaged in reading during the coolest part of the year! Earn raffle tickets for reading to put toward fun prizes. Prizes will be drawn in Feb. when the program ends!

Holiday Party (Wed. Dec. 6 from 3:30-4:30):

Stop by the library to make Holiday cards, play some games, and make some holiday crafts!

Life-Size Games (Wed. Dec. 27-Sat. Dec. 30--ALL DAY):

Need something to do over Winter Break? Come play life-size versions of your favorite games! Checkers, tic tac toe, Connect 4, and more!

Banned book week is Sept. 24-30! Children’s books such as Harry Potter, Captain Underpants, and Where’s Waldo have all been challenged and possibly banned throughout the years. We’ll have 2 “banned book” jars out at the Children’s desk. Each will contain shredded pages from a popular banned children’s book. Take a look at what is in the jar and see if you can guess which book it is. Those who guess correctly will win a prize!

Pumpkin Guessing Game:

From Oct. 16-Oct. 31, there will be 3 pumpkins on display at the library. Each will be decorated as a specific storybook character. Stop in to take your guess on which character each pumpkin is! Those who guess correctly will receive a prize!

Other activities the library offers: WiiU: We have a WiiU for use while you’re at the library. We have a few games for you to pick from including Mario Kart 8 and Angry Birds.

Tinker Kits: Check one of these out at the Children’s Desk for use while you’re at the library. The kits are filled with objects and you have to create something out of them! Lego Table & Train Tables: Great for young builders! Children’s Early Learning Computer: With games available in both English and Spanish, this computer is great for young minds to learn, explore, and play!
