CHANNEL ISLANDS

JERSEY TOUR Excursion to Guernsey

Excursion to Sark

As the second largest of the Channel Islands, Guernsey can be easily reached by ferry and is an ideal destination for a full day excursion. Explore the beautiful capital St. Peter Port with its cobbled streets and charming promenade. The picturesque harbour town has an excellent selection of restaurants and shopping facilities. Discover the 800 year old Castle Cornet and its five museums to delve into the fascinating history of the island. The castle is only a short walk away from the town centre and offers stunning panoramic views back towards St. Peter Port and out across the sister islands. Alternatively, visit Hauteville House which was the residence of the French writer Victor Hugo during his time in exile from France. During his life on Guernsey he was inspired to write “Les Misérables”.

Would you like to discover another of the Channel Islands? How about a day excursion from Jersey to beautiful Sark? The smallest of the Channel Islands will wow you with its tranquillity and unique transport options, because cars are banned from the roads on this island. A tractor will bring you up the steep hill from the harbour to the nearest village from where you can start to explore the island. Enjoy the remarkable scenery, bays and coastal paths by strolling around the beautiful island. Alternatively, you can book a horse-drawn carriage ride to get around the island. Another highlight is La Coupée which is a rocky ridge linking Great Sark and Little Sark. You have the possibility to visit La Seigneurie Gardens, the site of one of the last manor houses on Sark - it is well worth a visit.

Hiking in Jersey Jersey offers a wide variety of walking paths. From slow strolls across the sandy beaches to more energetic cliff-top hikes enjoy the unspoilt scenery, stunning cliffs, beautiful villages and imposing castles. One of the easier walks starts from the lighthouse La Corbière which is located in the southwest of the island to Les Mielles nature reserve (approx. 8 km, min. 1.5 hours, easy). Another possibility would be to hike around the historic ruins of Grosnez Castle where you can enjoy the most stunning views of the picturesque coastal area or walk down to Bouley Bay which is a small harbour situated in the north of Jersey. With flat land in the south and steep cliffs in the north, you can enjoy a hike based on your own preferences. Furthermore, you have the opportunity to discover the island by bike, as Jersey has so called Green Lanes which are car-free routes and therefore ideal for cycling. OUR TIP

The attractive capital of St. Hallier makes an excellent destination for a shopping trip, not just on account of its numerous boutiques but also because local taxes are much lower than in many other European regions. Fax: 0044 (0)20 8861 9499 • [email protected] • www.hotels-more.com

AND THE ORKNEY ISLANDS CLASSIC TRIP OUR TIP •• Visit the Ring of Brodgar, a stone circle built around 2500 BC, which predates both Stonehenge as well as the Egyptian pyramids. Originally made out of 60 ancient stones, twenty seven stones have stayed standing after all this time and endured wind and rain. The experience of walking around these ancient monuments, some up to fifteen feet high, is nothing short of breathtaking.

EXTENSION – Isle of Lewis & Isle of Harris

Scotland on Film

Extend your tour by two additional overnight stays (days 6 & 7) and visit two islands of the Outer Hebrides – the Isle of Lewis and the Isle of Harris. The largest island of the Outer Hebrides is the Isle of Lewis with its untouched nature and cultural heritage. On the second day continue to the Isle of Harris where you can enjoy the varied and spectacular scenery. Are you interested in seeing Scotland’s film locations and follow in the footsteps of your favourite film or TV series characters? This tour offers you the possibility to visit numerous famous film locations. The dramatic castles, rugged landscapes and mysterious stone formations in Scotland inspired the American author Diana Gabaldon to write her bestselling novels, Outlander, which have been made into a TV series. One of the first scenes of the series was filmed in Falkland and represents Inverness in the 1940s. Another highlight for Outlander fans is a visit to Doune Castle which was given the name of “Castle Leoch” in the series, the home of the MacKenzie Clan.

WITH THE IRISH THEMED TOUR OUR TIP •• “Laughter is brightest where the food is best” is an Irish proverb and around every kitchen table you will find moments of joy when fresh Irish Soda bread is coming out of the oven. Every family in Ireland has its own recipe for soda bread. Some like it sweet with a spoonful of honey, sugar, or dried fruits, while others prefer it sprinkled with seeds, bran and oats for a health boost, or treacle and Guinness for the opposite effect. The basic ingredients don’t change though; “bread soda” (bicarbonate of soda) and buttermilk form the raising agent, which is mixed in with flour. And nor does the way it’s eaten; sliced and spread liberally with butter. Try it before you leave the Emerald Isle.
