Sewall Child Development Center

Sewall Child Development Center provides inclusive, joyful, learning environments using the power of partnerships, diversity and belonging to enrich the social and academic growth of every child and family.

Dear Friends, Thank you for your support of Sewall in 2016. It is our group of dedicated supporters, those who are committed to inclusion, that allow us to have a large and lasting impact on the children of our community. With 72 years of experience serving the Denver Metro community, we reached new milestones last year, thanks in large part to the community’s support. Sewall grew collaborations at the Dahlia Campus for Health and Well-Being. Sewall also realized a long-awaited goal of purchasing, renovating, and relocating to a new headquarters. In 2016, we became licensed and fully operational at our new building at 940 Fillmore Street, where we have enriched the classroom environments, expanded toddler programming, built a new playground, and supported the start-up of our partner elementary charter school. Sewall has not only expanded, but also enhanced its impact for all children. Your support of Sewall this year allowed us to provide over 600 young children with high-quality, fully inclusive programs. Sewall continues to make strides in inclusion that will move beyond our walls to the community at large. You have helped young children and their families from all walks of life develop potential. Thank you for partnering with Sewall to make this all possible.

My son has a rare neurological disorder. Before we came to Sewall, he was crawling and was non-verbal. [After Sewall]...he walked up the stairs for the first time in an organic moment captured on video. His teachers and classmates chanted to encourage him! It’s exciting to see all Evan has been able to accomplish, to master, at Sewall. – Tara Bohle, parent

Preschool expansion and quality retention was a hallmark of 2016. In addition to the satellites added over the past 2 years in collaboration with Denver Public Schools, Sewall furthered its mission by opening 3 full-day preschool classrooms at the Dahlia Campus for Health and Well-Being in 2015. The preschool classes at MHCD’s Dahlia Campus graduated the first group of children in May 2016. The innovative program won significant funding from Constellation Philanthropy to allow more children and families to receive intensive supports in fully inclusive settings. We are honored to list these donors on Page 9 of this report.

Inclusion builds an unmistakeable lifetime impact.

KaBOOM: A New Playground in ONE Day! Thanks to our partners at KaBOOM! and Target, along with 200 community volunteers, Sewall and REACH built a brand-new playground in one day. On August 26, our community came together to provide a new playground for hundreds of children to enjoy. Tons and tons of landscaping materials, sawdust, and concrete were prepared for the site, and enthusiastic volunteers assembled playground equipment throughout the morning. A big thank you to our corporate sponsor, Target, and our friends at KaBoom! who helped make it all possible. Together, our community created a fun new area to play for all the children at Sewall and REACH.

Friendship at Sewall Talya (6) and Cadence (7) are two friends with different abilities and personalities, yet with similar hearts. Talya has thick, dark hair and loves books and singing. She also has some special needs that come with developmental delays. Cadence has blond hair, freckles, and loves to talk and share stories. These girls met at Sewall summer camp, where past Sewall graduates can learn and play every summer.

A Lifetime Commitment to Inclusion Talya and Cadence are just two of the many students who benefit every day from the inclusive education they received at Sewall.

They first connected over music. At a time when Talya was upset and unable to get her seatbelt latched, Cadence stepped right in and started singing, “You are my sunshine, my only sunshine…” Immediately, Talya calmed down and started singing along. With that, a wonderful friendship was born. In the weeks that followed, Cadence watched out for Talya and initiated walking together on field trips, riding next to each other on the van, and snuggling during rest time. As previous Sewall students, both girls have a heightened awareness of others and have taught each other lessons throughout Summer Camp. Talya helped Cadence learn that she likes to help her classmates. Cadence helped Talya learn to communicate through music. Now, the girls have their very own tune, “Pinkalicious,” that they can be heard singing together on the playground. Thanks to Sewall’s inclusive Summer Camp, these girls embraced one another and grew together over the summer. Their friendship is a beautiful thing to watch!

Thank you Sewall Volunteers!

In 2016, Sewall said goodbye to long-time supporter and Board member Gene Koelbel. Here, Gene is pictured with daughter Lynn Stambaugh, another dedicated Board member, at a milestone graduation – the first at Sewall’s new headquarters at 940 Fillmore Street. Sewall’s Board of Directors voted in the fall of 2016 to dedicate the new “Koelbel Building” in honor of Gene and Walt Koelbel’s longtime dedication to the children at Sewall. We know that Gene’s legacy will live on through the thousands of young children whose lives will be forever enhanced because of her generosity and dedication. Gene’s 60 years of service to Sewall, and her dedication to children, will be forever missed.

Volunteers were delighted by visits from special guests Josh Blue, a nationally known comedian basedin Denver, and Reggie Rivers, who cheered on the crowd! In 2016, the Junior League of Denver continued a long-time community partnership with Sewall through the Kids Connect Literacy Program. Throughout the year, dozens of Sewall families attended the bi-weekly activities, complete with story hour, free books, dinner, and a chance to read together. Families were able to connect with one another and with the larger Sewall community through Kids Connect. We are grateful to all of our volunteers with the Junior League and to all of the Sewall staff and families who made this great program possible!

For nearly 10 years on the second Friday of June, employee teams from Deloitte Denver have descended upon Sewall’s Campus during their Global Day of Impact. Volunteers helped spruce up the exterior of Sewall’s playground and support much-needed landscaping efforts.

A hallmark of Sewall’s family support programs is Sewall’s new Partners in Leadership program, provided through a generous grant from the Colorado Developmental Disabilities Council. Sewall served 12 families and two adult self-advocates across the year, as participants committed to nine weekend sessions learning and growing together.

Sewall’s Diagnostic and Evaluation Clinic conducted 68 diagnostic evaluations for children from 18 months through 10 years old. Sewall is proudly one of the only clinics providing arena style evaluations in the larger metro area, and one of two serving Medicaid-eligible families. Last year, 67 of the children served were Medicaid-eligible.

In 2016, Sewall received generous support from Constellation Philanthropy–a committed group of local philanthropists dedicated to investing in improving the early childhood landscape. Collectively, this group invested more than $152,000 to support the children served at the Dahlia Campus Inclusive Preschool. Sewall CEO Heidi Heissenbuttel, in tandem with Dr. Lydia Prado of MHCD, presented an opportunity to invest in the collaborative partnership at the Dahlia Campus. Donors invested to increase special education support, Pyramid coaching, data tracking, and program evaluation. This investment will also help MHCD provide increased family support through one-on-one sessions, therapy, and parent coaching. Together, this will allow Sewall to continue strengthening and expanding services to more children. We are grateful and excited to partner in this important work! Partners in Leadership was an empowering, cathartic and motivating experience for us. The knowledge we gained will be extremely valuable for our family as our daughter moves into adulthood and in reducing the anxiety that this process can bring. We also hope to make some meaningful changes in the ways in which our children are educated. We’re very thankful to have had the opportunity to participate!
