Introducing The Fennellys William Fennelly arrived in the United States in 1890 at the young age of sixteen years. One of five sons of Michael and Marie Fennelly of Mountmellick, Ireland, young Will came to live with his Uncle, John Fennelly and wife Agnes, who had settled, with many of their Irish neighbors after the potato famine, in the rolling hills of northeast Iowa, near the town of Elkader. To young Will’s surprise, Uncle John had changed the spelling of his name upon arriving in America from Fennelly to Finley, so Will, too, changed Fennelly to Finley. It wasn’t too many years before Will met the love of his life, Emma Roach. Will and his bride inherited a farm in Highland Township from Uncle John and Aunt Agnes, and there they raised their family. Only one of Will’s brothers remained in Ireland in Queen’s County, now County Loais (pronounced Leash), and there are many Fennelly descendants residing in Ireland today. Great-grandson Tim Finley and wife Trisha are your hosts. Both grew up in Elkader, were high-school sweethearts, and vowed to love, honor, and raise their family in this great small town. This fourth generation Irish Finley family not only runs this fine establishment, but are also busy raising the fifth American Finley generation. Tim and Trisha resettled in Elkader after graduating from Iowa State University. Tim is a Certified Chef with degrees in Culinary Arts and Restaurant Management, and has been working in the restaurant and hospitality industry since 1995. Trisha has also been working in the restaurant and hospitality industry since 1996. When planning the restaurant and menu Tim and Trisha strove to blend traditional Irish food and flavors with traditional Midwest tastes along with other influences from Tim's culinary career and training. Some food is their own take on Irish favorites. Through many tastings and recipe revisions Tim and Trisha came up with recipes that honor the home cooked nature of the Irish originals, but were also suitable to American tastes. So if you were in Ireland recently and Fennellys' offerings do not taste exactly like what you had on the Old Sod, it is because Tim and Trisha made changes to add their own flair and interpretation to the food.
