Saving Yorkshire Lives

Thank you for helping the people of Yorkshire tackle cancer… Without you, we couldn’t fund as many vital research and community health projects in Yorkshire as we do. With support like yours, the 30,000 people in the region who are told they have cancer each year will have better access to the treatment and services they need when dealing with a diagnosis. Take a look at the range of exciting projects below that are helping so many people avoid, survive and cope with cancer.

£7m Investment into Lung Cancer & Early Cancer Diagnosis This incredible multi-million pound investment will take the form of five successful projects: £5.2m – invested in the UK’s largest mobile lung cancer screening trial, carried out in partnership with Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. £712,501 – invested in a community health campaign in Hull encouraging smokers and ex-smokers to attend lung health checks. £272,142 – invested in funding research at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, the University of Manchester and specialist cancer centre The Christie NHS Foundation Trust to improve radiotherapy treatment for patients with lung cancer. £486,014 – invested in a health check project aimed at improving the early diagnosis of cancer in disadvantaged communities across Yorkshire. £347,666 – invested in improving participation in bowel scope screening in Hull.

Improving Cancer Treatment in the Region We‘re bringing 10 of the UK’s most promising researchers and cancer specialists to Sheffield in a multi-million pound project that aims to further reinforce the city as one of the best centres in the country for patient-focused cancer research.

Working with the University of Hull to Tackle Cancer Inequalities Working in partnership with the university, the Hull York Medical School and Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, we’ll deliver a series of five-year research projects that will ensure more people in the city survive cancer.

Our ‘Wise Up to Cancer’ Scheme is launched The ‘Wise Up to Cancer’ programme has been rolled out in West Leeds and Wakefield, in partnership with community organisation Barca-Leeds, Community Pharmacy West Yorkshire and Leeds Beckett University. By providing simple health checks in lots of settings like pharmacies, community centres, shopping centres, and workplaces we can help people make healthier lifestyle choices and reduce their chances of developing cancer.

Improving Cancer Outcomes for Asian Women in Bradford Using a £216,000 award from the Tampon Tax Fund, we will launch a scheme aimed at women in Bradford’s Asian communities to improve early diagnosis by raising awareness of vital cancer screenings and signs and symptoms.

Keeping you Safe in the Sun at Beverley Racecourse We’ve loved partnering up with Beverley Racecourse, keeping staff and race-goers prepared for the hot summer weather with sunscreen dispensers and raising money by selling UV colour-changing wristbands.

Active Beyond Cancer programme gets off to a great start Delivered at Xercise4Less North in partnership with Leeds Rhinos Foundation, our first group of ladies have completed a 12-week course offering great tips on how to get active after diagnosis. We can’t wait to start the next three courses in the coming 12 months!

Bringing National Experts to Yorkshire March saw a meeting of national cancer experts at the charity headquarters in Harrogate, focussed on improving the experience of cancer patients living in the region. Following this workshop, researchers have been invited to apply for some of our essential funding. We’re looking forward to announcing the successful applicants in January 2018.

Getting Active with Sheffield’s Move More Month We were delighted to invest a fantastic £50,000 into the Move More city-wide interactive challenge, resulting in over two million active minutes from the people of Sheffield!

We are only able to tackle Yorkshire’s cancer problems because of the support of people like you.

Thank you.
