She has extensive experience in industry, academia, and policy settings. After receiving B.A. and M.Sc. degrees in Geology from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, Boland worked in petroleum and mineral exploration in the private sector, and industrial minerals at the Geological Survey of Ireland. She later received her Ph.D. in Geology from the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado, where she developed her policy expertise and taught multiple courses on the intersection of science and policy. Most recently, Boland served as an AAAS Executive Branch Science & Technology Policy Fellow at the USGS (2010-2012) and as the American Geophysical Union Congressional Science Fellow in the U.S. Senate (2009-2010). He then joined the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Cost Assessment and Program Evaluation (CAPE), where he conducted analysis and provided advice on the DoD's Science and Technology, Homeland Defense, Nuclear Command and Control, and Combating WMD portfolios. After promotion to the Senior Executive Service, he led the Program Analysis Division within CAPE, where he oversaw major cross-cutting analyses and all DoD Front End Assessments, which were selected by and reported out to the Secretary of Defense himself. He is a former AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow in EHR in the Division of Undergraduate Education. He worked in DUE to explore how the Vision and Change in Undergraduate Biology Education: A Call to Action report has impacted the biology education community. He has a BA in Biological Anthropology from Harvard, and PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Princeton. For his PhD and postdoc, Ilya studied movement ecology, collective behavior, and social networks of zebras and other wildlife in Kenya. Ilya also cofounded the campus sustainability organization, Greening Princeton. Ilya did his AAAS Fellowship at USAID, with the then-Global Climate Change Team, including a detail with the Office of S&T. He was also a AAAS/AGU Congressional fellow, with then-Representative Markey and the Natural Resources Committee. Since completing the fellowships, Ilya co-produced (with former fellow Sabrina McCormick) Down to Earth, a web series on environmental current events. He was also an Organizing Fellow with the Obama campaign. Ilya is currently a Program Coordinator for the National Climate Assessment (look out for the third NCA report late this Spring!) at the US Global Change Research Program.

Through ASD(R&E) she directs the Minerva Research Initiative, a $27M university-based basic research program for improving fundamental understanding of the social and cultural forces that shape regions of the world of strategic importance to the Nation. Dr. Fitzgerald has been Research Fellow at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies since 2011 and comes to ASD(R&E) through an intergovernmental personnel agreement. Before her work on Minerva, she spent two years at the Basic Science Office as a AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow, where she developed strategic plans for future basic research investments and was instrumental in revamping DoD policies on export control and restrictive clauses on fundamental university research. Dr. Fitzgerald previously worked at the National Academies as a Christine Mirzayan Science and Technology Graduate Policy Fellow and Associate Program Officer in the Air Force Studies Board, where she contributed to defense intelligence studies on technology forecasting. Her internships at Microsoft, Intel, BBN Technologies, and elsewhere have given her a complementary familiarity with the industry research and development environment. Dr. Fitzgerald received her B.S. in electrical and computer engineering (with a minor in music performance) from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA, where she also served as Student Body President, and her master’s and Ph.D. degrees in electrical and computer engineering from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. Her research in speech and language processing combined electrical engineering, computer science, and cognitive science approaches to contribute to efforts in automatic speech recognition and language translation. In 2010 Dr. Fitzgerald consulted for Mattel through the National Academy of Engineering on the design of the Barbie® I Can Be...™ Computer Engineer Doll.

BIO Dr. Hasen serves in the Office of the Global AIDS Coordinator as the Senior HIV Prevention Advisor. Her portfolio at OGAC encompasses both technical and programmatic issues, with a focus on HIV prevention and gender issues in Southern Africa. Dr. Hasen spent the early years of her career working in non-profit organizations focused on women’s health and safety, both in the USA and abroad. These include after school projects for Moroccan girls; work with the British Pregnancy Advisory Service providing pregnancy testing and health counseling; and non-profit management training at Britain’s National Council for Voluntary Organisations, all in the UK. In the US, her non-profit experience includes prevention of gender-based violence projects in diverse settings, as well as grassroots leadership development and training. Dr. Hasen’s scientific background is in behavioral neuroscience; she earned her PhD in Zoology from the University of Wisconsin, where her research focused on the neural basis of maternal behaviors. As a women’s health post-doctoral fellow, she developed animal models for research on the social and biological determinants of health disparities in breast cancer. Dr. Hasen has resided in Washington, DC since 2009.

She is on detail from the NOAA Climate Program Office, where she served for the past two years as the Ecosystem Science Advisor, after completing her AAAS Fellowship (2009-2011). Laura works across Federal agencies to enhance coordination and ensure that best-available science informs and supports U.S. climate preparedness and resilience efforts. She has been involved in several major U.S. climate and ocean initiatives, including the President’s Climate Action Plan, the Interagency Climate Change Adaptation Task Force, the National Climate Assessment, and the National Ocean Policy. Her scientific background and expertise are on the impacts of climate and global change on coastal and marine ecosystems. Laura has a Ph.D. in Zoology (Marine Ecology) from Oregon State University and a B.A. in Biology from Cornell University.

Dr. Pohlhaus received her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Duke University, and she transitioned into Science Policy through the prestigious AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowship, which she executed in the NIH Office of the Director. During her tenure, she coordinated major research and policy efforts in the area of women in biomedical careers, and provided senior policy-makers with advice and recommendations to set policy, such as the successful broadening of eligibility for several NIH programs. She regularly produced memoranda, presentations and speeches for senior NIH staff, and personally delivered a briefing to staff of the United States House of Representatives Science & Technology Committee. Dr. Pohlhaus was recognized as a “Woman in Science” at NIH 2007-2008. Dr. Pohlhaus has led many teams for the NIH Office of the Director and other clients. Under her leadership, the company coordinated several trans-NIH high-visibility projects including Enhancing Peer Review and Recovery Act Extramural Communications. She received 2 NIH Director’s Awards and 2 awards from the Office of Extramural Research for Extreme Dedication. Dr. Pohlhaus recently completed the PMP Exam Preparation course and is qualified to sit for the Project Management Professional Certification.

Meghan Radtke [email protected] (preferred) Biologist at the Environmental Protection Agency (2 years) EEANR, Environmental Protection Agency, Office of the Science Advisor, 2008-2010 Louisiana State University, Ecology Areas of mentorship: Career/Life Balance; Fellowship Challenges; Workplace Challenges; Navigating Careers inside the Federal Government BIO Meghan Radtke received her B.S in biology from Arizona State University and her Ph.D. in plant biology from Louisiana State University. She worked for the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality as an environmental scientist overseeing the remediation of hazardous and solid waste sites. Then she transitioned to an AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellowship at the USEPA in the Office of the Science Advisor. During the Fellowship, she worked on science and technology policy issues related to asbestos, climate change and health, biodiversity and health, scientific integrity, and geographical earth observations. After completing the Fellowship, she took a position as a senior scientist at a small consulting company that supported science work at the USEPA. She worked on multiple writing assignments to support sustainability, environmental monitoring, and other science initiatives at the Agency. She was then hired by EPA's Office of Pesticide Programs where she is currently performs environmental risk assessments that evaluate the effects of pesticides on endangered species. Her portfolio of chemicals includes 2,4-D, fipronil, thiamethoxam, oxamyl, and other pesticides.

Ariana Sutton-Grier [email protected] (preferred) NOAA, Program Analyst (1.5 years) EEA - NOAA, OHC (2010 - 2012) Duke University, Ecology Areas of mentorship: Career/Life Balance, Fellowship Challenges, Workplace Challenges, Navigating Careers Inside the Federal Government, Diversity Issues, Women in science, etc. BIO Dr. Sutton-Grier is an ecosystem ecologist who studies how nutrients cycle in ecosystems and how these cycles impact ecosystem restoration, water quality, and climate change. She is also interested in ecosystem service measurement and valuation and how ecosystem nitrogen and carbon cycling can be included in environmental markets. A graduate of Duke University's Program in Ecology, then a Smithsonian Fellow at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) in Edgewater, MD, she recently completed a AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellowship at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the Office of Habitat Conservation. Her primary role as a AAAS fellow was to connect natural science and social science, via ecosystem services and environmental markets, to support NOAA policies and its habitat conservation mission. This goal aligned nicely with her research interests because she is broadly interested in how human environmental change is affecting ecosystem function and the ability of ecosystems to provide the ecosystem services on which we depend. Thus, in addition to her academic credentials, she has experience working in government on environmental policies and environmental markets, including nutrient trading and valuing ecosystem carbon storage and sequestration. Dr. Sutton-Grier is currently working in the National Ocean Service (NOS) at NOAA working with the Chief Science Advisor, Deputy Assistant Administrator, and Assistant Administrator on NOAA's Ecosystem Services Portfolio as well as coordinating NOS' Sandy Supplemental activities to build resilience in coastal communities. She is interested in additional opportunities that combine science and policy with a focus on solving environmental problems and promoting habitat conservation.

David Weinreich [email protected] (preferred) Weinreich Strategic Group, Principal (2 years) University of Memphis, Mathematics Areas of mentorship: Career/Life Balance; Fellowship Challenges; Workplace Challenges; Navigating Careers Inside the Federal Government, Navigating Careers Outside the Federal Government BIO Dr. Weinreich has worked in Congress and the Executive Branch on nearly every public policy issue, from agriculture to tax policy and from heath care to foreign affairs. Beginning with his experience as the first Congressional Fellow for the American Mathematical Society (AMS) in 2005-2006, he has served as a staffer for three Members of Congress. He is a veteran of several political campaigns for current and former Members of Congress. He has also worked at the National Science Foundation as a Science and Technology Policy Fellow through the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). At NSF, he worked on broad policy issues in Environmental Research and Education as well as the Division of Mathematical Sciences. Outside of the government, he held faculty positions in mathematics at Gettysburg College and the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse, and also taught middle and high school at Queen Anne School in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Major accomplishments he has contributed to include passing the HIRE Act, which provided tax credits to businesses that hire new employees who were previously on unemployment; creating Qualified School Construction Bonds to help school districts build or renovate schools; doubling funding for nuclear nonproliferation efforts in 2006; and preventing cuts to fire grants and homeland security funding for areas in need. He helped write and edit Pathways to the Future, a policy document on future developments for NSF’s Division of Environmental Research and Education. As a research mathematician, he has several peer-reviewed publications in top journals and has presented his research around the world. He was a 2000 – 2001 Mathematical Association of America (MAA) Project NEXT Fellow, and has received grants and awards for both teaching and research.
