A message from the Membership Committee

Dear Members, A very warm welcome as we celebrate the Club’s first year anniversary. As an important part of one of the most prestigious and dynamic City Clubs in the region, we are certain that you will continue to enjoy the benefits of your Capital Club membership as our Member roster continues to grow, and we build upon the Club’s valuable services and offerings on a regular basis. April 2015 saw membership grow and surpass the 700 mark, a real achievement for the Club and a solid endorsement for its position as an important business institution in Kenya. As always, the Membership Committee, along with the Membership Team, has been working on the honorable mandate of keeping the Club exclusive and by ‘invitation-only’ in order to ensure it retains its position as Nairobi’s foremost private Club. In this regard, your suggestions and referrals of new Members are always welcome. A number of you have been actively proposing new Members and we thank you for your esteemed participation. Please remember that this is your Club, and your feedback is always important to us in order to continuously improve. If there is anything we can do to enhance your experience, please let us know.

Welcome message from the

General Manager Dear Members,

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE Amb. Dennis Awori- Chairman Anwar Hajee- Vice Chairman Aly Popat Japh Olende Kuria Muchiru Mike du Toit Surinder Kapila

Welcome to our Inaugural edition of Capital Life magazine! 2014 was a wonderfully active year, with the Club welcoming 650 Members in its first year of operation. On the events side we celebrated our Grand Opening Week in style with a variety of events and celebrations. Our Social Responsibility initiatives brought about a huge response from our generous Members who managed to raise a substantial amount enabling us to purchase a Baby Rescue Vehicle for New Life Home Trust. In December, once again our Members rolled up their sleeves and cooked and served an amazing dinner to fellow Members, raising over 2 million Shillings in support of SOS Children. The launch of the annual Business Outlook series was a big success featuring as it did, some of the city’s admired business leaders and Club Members. We were honored to have played host to the Forbes Person of the Year Award and Aliko Dangote who won the 2014 accolade. We welcomed some interesting celebrities: the President of Barcelona FC, the Lord Mayor of London, Griff Rhys Jones, Wyclef Jean and even the FA Cup made a rare appearance on the Rooftop, with Members having the privilege of posing with the world’s oldest football trophy.

We ended the year in great celebration at our NYE party with the world’s 2nd best female DJ Sabrina who kept more than 200 Members on their feet. 2014 was also the year we held our first Signature Clubs-led event connecting Capital Club EA to our sister Clubs in Dubai and Bahrain in a simultaneous live broadcast. This is the start of an initiative that Signature Clubs is keen to continue as they expand into Africa and beyond. The planning for the second Signature Series is underway as well as other topical events that will foster networking opportunities amongst Members between our sister Clubs, encouraging greater camaraderie and more business opportunities.

entrepreneur and CEO of Acumen Jacqueline Novogratz and Safaricom’s Bob Collymore. In March Bob also moderated a fascinating discussion with former President of Pepsi Cola and CEO of Apple John Sculley, and in April Club Member Anne Eriksson was in conversation with Diageo Global CEO/ President, Ivan Menezes.

This leads into one of the key focuses of 2015. The Membership Team will be working diligently to facilitate networking opportunities as part of a strong benefit to being a Member. Additionally, the Membership Committee, whose role has been instrumental and appreciated, will continue to ensure we maintain the calibre of membership as we grow.

Finally, I wish to thank the Members of the Board of Governors and the Club Committees for their ongoing and active participation and support in assuring the Club is of the finest quality and a source of pride for our Members. I look forward to continuing the year as we have begun and to reach many more milestones together.

The New Year started off sensationally with four quality Members-only events which packed out the Kilimanjaro Room: in January we hosted the ‘World’s Best CEO’, General Electric’s Jeff Immelt. This was closely followed in February by a moving and frank conversation between social

After months of preparation, our milestone moment arrived on April 11th, with the celebration of the Club’s 1st Anniversary. It was a stunning ‘Black & White’ themed Gala attended by over 500 Members and their guests. Thank you for helping to make it a memorable night.

I am delighted to be addressing you through this, our first Capital Life newsletter, coming on the back of our sterling 1st Anniversary celebration. In his welcome speech on the night of the Gala, the Chairman of the Company’s Board Vishal Agarwal used the word ‘ICONIC’ to define this Club – I have to agree with him. Today, Capital Club East Africa is intertwined in your business and personal life - on the one hand symbolic of the economic times we live in, but also a home for the lifestyles of the captains that drive our economy every day, striking a balance between young and old, experience and youth, intuitions and entrepreneurs. But equally important to our vision, the Club is striking a gender balance, drawing out our Members from the comforts of their communities to this community that we all belong to, and giving back to the eco system we live in – providing platforms for learning, self-development and growth. We love the fact that you can come together to network; to meet; to conduct commerce and also choose us for your lifestyles. We love the fact that business leaders can run into each other at our gym or in our Members bar or at the Thursday Jazz Nights – for no reason other than developing deeper relations. The numerous stories of deals being constructed in our three floors or relations being formed over dinner and shisha on our roof top, brings us a great sense of joy and achievement, propelling us to do bigger and brighter things.

We started 2015 on an extremely positive note both for membership and events. Our Member roster has surpassed the 700 mark; our events have brought in extremely senior and inspirational personalities; and we managed to source an Executive Chef with a Michelin Star and a track record of cooking for HM Queen Elizabeth II and other Royals. From Global CEOs, Politicians, and Forbes Magazine Person of the Year, to Celebrities – we have had our share of names and selfies at the Club – yet the community of this club and the family of this membership determines its true iconic value. Our Governors, membership teams and you our Members have worked tirelessly to help us stay true to being a premier business lifestyle club. We rely on all your support in maintaining the quality of our membership, our offering and our standards for many years to come.

Bob Collymore Chairman of the Board of Governors

CCEA Baby Rescue Vehicle

CCEA Baby Rescue Vehicle

Responsibilty CAPITAL CLUB POWERS NEW LIFE HOME TRUST WITH A BABY RESCUE VEHICLE In June 2014, Capital Club, East Africa’s premier private City Club, donated a double cabin baby rescue vehicle to New Life Home Trust. The vehicle is an instrumental component to the institution’s efforts to save the lives of day-old babies across the country who are occasionally abandoned or left unsupervised for long periods of time.

have significantly helped support a worthy cause. We believe the vehicle will go a long way towards facilitating the institution’s operations while making it easier to attend to emergencies,” noted Andrew Christon, Capital Club’s General Manager. Upon receiving the keys to the Baby Rescue Vehicle, Clive Beckenham, Founder of New Life Home Trust, acknowledged the immense contribution the vehicle will have towards meeting engagements aimed at identifying and bringing abandoned children into care programmes as the institution seeks to provide them with a compassionate remedy to their spiritual, physical, emotional, economical and sociological needs.

With KSH 3.4 million raised during the Club’s grand opening week held in March 2014, Club management and staff presented the new Baby Rescue Vehicle to the institution’s Founding Directors Clive and Mary Beckenham as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility efforts.

“Our hearts go out to Capital Club East Africa for the generous donation which will come in handy towards the rescue operations of vulnerable babies in Kenya,” added Mr. Beckenham.

“We are impressed and equally humbled by the work being undertaken by New Life Home Trust and are honoured to support such noble initiatives aimed at giving a future to the young lives,” commented Mr. Alnashir Popat, Capital Club’s Chairman of the Corporate Social Responsibility committee during the handover ceremony.

In April 2015 the Club received actual rescue photos from Guy Bastable, Manager - Partner Relations of New Life Home Trust, he said “Just got these photos of a recent baby rescue last week in/near Nyeri. Although we are using the vehicle all the time to rescue babies, it’s not often that we catch the vehicle on camera. We tend to wait to take the first photos once the babies are safely back in the home. So it was good to see the vehicle featuring in these particular photos. I am sure they will greatly encourage your Members.”

New Life Home Trust was formed in 1994 to provide refuge to vulnerable and abandoned babies. As of February 2014, the institution has rescued over 1,498 babies through a network of seven homes spread across the country where over 330 of these babies were HIV positive upon admission. “Our sincere gratitude goes out to our Members and grand opening sponsors whose generous contributions
