MOBILE PHONE INFORMATION 1. Can I use my phone from home in the U.S.? Most phone companies in the U.S. use a CDMA network. Most phone companies outside the U.S. use a GSM network. If your phone is unlocked and uses a SIM card, then you may be able to purchase a U.S. SIM card from AT&T. 2. Is there prepaid service for mobile phones in the U.S.? Prepaid mobile phone services in the U.S. are not very popular. Almost every company offers a prepaid service, but prepaid plans for smartphones are limited. Popular prepaid plans cost about $50 for a month of unlimited talk time, SMS, and data. A prepaid plan may be the best option for short-term stays in the U.S. 3. How can I buy a monthly mobile plan? Plans purchased with a specified amount of talk time, SMS, and data can be the least expensive option for students staying in the U.S. for a year or more. Additionally, this option usually includes a significant discount on a new mobile phone when you sign a contract with the carrier. However, monthly plans often require the subscriber to have a social security number. If you do not have one, you may need to wait several days, or pay a refundable deposit. 4. What companies offer service for Android, Blackberry, and IPhones? Verizon Wireless, AT&T, and Sprint PCS offer services for these phones. NTelos and Boost Mobile offer limited services for these phones. 5. Is there 4G service in Huntington? 4G coverage in West Virginia is currently only available for Verizon Wireless customers. Verizon Wireless is the largest mobile phone service in the U.S. Verizon offers ‘unlimited’ prepaid plans starting at $50/month. Currently Verizon is the only carrier in Huntington that offers 4G coverage.
