Town of New Canaan seeks Corps permit to place fill to stabilize banks of Noroton River in New Canaan CONCORD, Mass. – The Town of New Canaan, Connecticut Environmental Commission, is seeking a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to conduct work in waters of the United States in conjunction with stabilizing banks of the Noroton River in New Canaan, Conn. Proposed work includes placing fill material below Ordinary High Water in 0.63 acres of the Noroton River in order to stabilize both banks of the Noroton River in the reach from a shared driveway (leading to 681 through 689 Old Stamford Road) to Raymonds Pond in New Canaan. A hardened bank stabilization treatment has been found to be necessary. The work is proposed in a Federal Emergency Management Agency-identified floodway. The application for the federal permit was filed with the Corps of Engineers in compliance with Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, which regulates the discharge or fill of material in United States waters, including wetlands. The public notice can be viewed on the Corps website at http://www.nae.usace.army.mil. Select Regulatory/Permitting and then weekly public notices. The Corps is soliciting comments on both the project itself and the range of issues to be addressed in the environmental documentation. Public comments on the Corps permit review (File # NAE-2008-2559) should be forwarded no later than May 20, 2009 to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District, Regulatory Division (ATTN: William Mullen), 696 Virginia Road, Concord, MA 01742-2751. Additional information is available from Permit Project Manager William Mullen at 978-318-8559 or toll free 800-343-4789 or 800-362-4367 (if calling from within Massachusetts) or by email to [email protected] -- 30 --
