Optional Activities Our goal is to organize activities that encourage interaction in English, are unique to the West Coast, and which encourage group cooperation and fun.
Please note that all activities and costs are subject to change without notice. Students register and pay for their chosen optional activities after SELSA has started. Spaces are limited for some activities.
Kayaking Cost: $60.00 Time: 3 hours (6:00 9:00 pm) These kayaking sessions take place in the scenic ocean waters of Victoria’s Inner Harbour and the Gorge waterway. You will be taught the basic skills of kayaking while enjoying the beauty of Victoria’s coastal environment.
StandUp Paddle Boarding (SUP) Cost: $60.00 Time: 3 hours (6:00 9:00 pm) Looking for the best view of Victoria’s picturesque harbour waterways? All you have to do is jump on the water with us on a SUP. During this unique, fun and inspiring instructional tour, you will get a chance to feel confident and learn how to SUP. You will see the city up close. Seals, seaplanes, eagles and all sorts of interesting activity – this tour has it all!
Butchart Gardens Cost: $30.00 ( meals not included) Time: 5:45 pm 12:00 am Enjoy fiftyfive acres of wonderful floral display, spectacular views, and meandering paths as you stroll through Butchart Gardens . When the sun goes down you will be thrilled by the pyrotechnic marvels of one of the most extravagant fireworks display in North America.
Please note that this trip includes SELSA bus transportation from Mayfair Mall to the Gardens and a return bus to the mall at the end of the night. If you do not require transportation, it would be best to meet SELSA at the gardens and purchase your own ticket.
Camping and Caving (2 days) Cost: $150.00 for caving option. $165 for rappelling option (Dinner and breakfast included) Time: Saturday 9:00 am to Sunday 6:00 pm If you love to camp, there’s no better place to be than the Vancouver Island region. While camping, you will have the opportunity to enjoy scenery that is pure BC. The campsite is located next to Horne Lake with crystal clear water, surrounded by spectacular views. On this camping trip you will have the opportunity to experience one of Vancouver Island’s most amazing natural wonders. While exploring underground caves you will find beautiful crystal formations, ancient fossils and climb an underground waterfall. NEW THIS YEAR For an additional $15 students can replace caving with rappelling. Learn how to descend vertical rock faces on rope. You will learn the basics of rock rappelling while in an outdoor environment. Coached and encouraged by a trained rock instructor, climbers make their way down the rock wall and progress from easy sloped descents to more challenging freehanging drops. At the end of the night you can relax with friends and staff in the campsite then sleep
in a wall tent for a peaceful night’s sleep in the fresh BC air.
Whale Watching Cost: $90.00 Time: 3 31/2 hrs (6:00 pm start) If you are seeking an adventure this might be the trip for you! The lightning fast zodiacs give you an ocean level view of the beautiful west coast scenery and the marine life that inhabits our ocean. Participants travel by zodiac in search of orcas, humpback whales, minke whales, porpoises, harbour seals, sea lions, elephant seals, and many bird species. A trained guide accompanies each group. The tour generally lasts 3 to 3.5 hours. Please note that Whale sightings are not guaranteed, but have had excellent luck thus far.
Whistler Trip Cost: $390.00 ( no meals included) Time: Friday to Sunday (2:00 pm Friday 9:00 pm Sunday) Bestknown for its downhill skiing, snowboarding and winter wonderland activities, Whistler is actually a yearround destination that’s perfect for hikers and sightseers. Alpine meadows, sprawling glaciers and indigenous wildlife are just some of the wonders you’ll experience on Whistler’s hiking and walking trails. Friday afternoon you will be transported from Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal on a deluxe video equipped motor coach. Our first stop will be at Shannon Falls for some photo opportunities. This is Canada’s 3rd largest waterfall. After checking into the hotel you will have the opportunity to go on a guided tour of Whistler village and then have free time to eat dinner and relax back at the hotel. Saturday you will have the opportunity to ride the new PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola . This glass bottom sky cabin offers riders a one of a kind adventure and window to Whistler Blackcomb’s mountain top summer. The gondola soars 415 metres above the valley floor and provides riders with a 360degree view of the rugged mountain peaks. At the top of the mountain you can eat lunch in the restaurant or go on a shortguided hike through the alpine
meadow. Later that day you can enjoy some free time in the village before returning to the hotel. Sunday offers a guided hike to Lost Lake . This Lake is well known for its sandy beach, grassy fields, and picnic area. You will have a chance to enjoy some free time in the village after leaving Lost Lake. This is a great opportunity to shop for souvenirs and eat lunch before we leave.
Discovery Island Kayaking Tour Cost: $200.00 (lunch included) Time: Day Trip (8:30 am – 3:30 pm) You will take a shuttle boat out to Discovery Island, a Marine Provincial Park. With the scenic vistas of the Olympic Mountains as our backdrop, we will explore the rugged and wild islands from
our kayaks . Watch for seals, sea lions, eagles, and other wildlife in this intertidal area while a little farther into the Strait keep an eye out for dolphin, porpoise, Killer whales (orcas), Humpback whales, Gray and Minke whales. Navigating the tranquil waters and approaching Chatham Islands, the pace is easy and relaxed the perfect gateway to nature. You will kayak for about 3 to 4 hours and should be physically fit to take this tour. After lunch on the beach we will hike inland to explore the island. Discovery Island’s inviting forest, with tall west coast trees swaying overhead, surrounds us as we follow the trail to the historic lighthouse. Majestic views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the San Juan Islands present excellent photo opportunities.
Vancouver Trip #1 The West Coast Experience
Cost: $130.00 ( meals not included) Time: Day Trip (6:00 am – 8:30 pm) This is a busy day trip to Vancouver! We’ll start the day with a truly west coast experience, a cruise on the BC Ferries . After arriving in Vancouver the first attraction we will visit is the Vancouver Aquarium at
Stanley Park . The aquarium is home to 70,000 amazing animals. Visitors can expect to encounter Sea Lions, beluga whales, dolphins and more. Upon leaving the Aquarium, students will board the Stanley Park Train – one of Vancouver’s most popular attractions. Travel over trestles and through tunnels on your twokilometre winding journey through the Stanley Park forest. Appreciate nature from a relaxing seat on a replica of Canadian Pacific Railway Engine #374, famous for pulling Canada's first transcontinental passenger train into Vancouver in the late 1880s. Next stop, Lynn Canyon Park. Lynn Canyon Park is a great location for a picnic, a leisurely hike, or a refreshing swim in one of the many popular swimming holes. The park has grown from 12 acres in its early years to 617 acres today and contains second growth forest with most of the trees aged approximately 80 to 100 years old. Lynn Canyon Park features a suspension bridge that sways 50 meters above the canyon. It was built privately in 1912 when the park opened. Great photo opportunities await! After Lynn Canyon, we will be heading up to Grouse Mountain . Just 15 minutes from downtown, Vancouver’s premier attraction offers the perfect destination for a truly rewarding and memorable experience. You will have a variety of cultural, educational and outdoor adventures to choose from. While here you may want to catch the Lumberjack show, Birds of Prey
demonstration, theatre in the sky or catch a glimpse of the two resident bears Grinder and Coola (bear sightings are not guaranteed).
Vancouver Trip #2 Suspension bridge, Shopping and Splashing Cost: $130.00 (meals not included) Time: Day Trip (6:00 am – 8:35 pm) This is another busy day trip to Vancouver! We'll start the day with a truly west coast experience, a cruise on the BC Ferries . After arriving in Vancouver the first attraction we will visit is the Capilano Suspension Bridge . Just minutes from the bustle of downtown Vancouver the Capilano Suspension bridge offers a unique mix of adventure, culture and history. Visitors can experience the natural beauty of this west coast rainforest from suspended bridges that reach up to 100 feet above the forest floor. After visiting the Capilano Suspension Bridge students will have the afternoon to shop in downtown Vancouver. We will be dropped off in the downtown core where a variety of shopping options. Here is what Tourism Vancouver has to say, “Shopping is what Robson Street is famous for. Whether you’re looking to give your credit card a thorough workout, or window shopping is more your speed, Robson Street will hit the spot. The main retail shopping area starts around Granville Street, which is where you’ll find the Nordstrom department store and the entrance to the Pacific Centre Pacific Centre shopping mall, stretching down to Jervis Street. In between, you’ll find most of the major North American fashion brands, along with a lively mix of sporting goods, accessories, homewares, beauty and wellness purveyors.” Our final destination is Splashdown Water Park where students can ride the slides, float on the lazy river, and relax in the sunshine. Splashdown Park is Greater Vancouver’s only Waterslide Park. Splashdown has something to offer for everyone. Amenities here include: 13 Water Slides of all shapes and sizes… and for all levels too! Video Game Arcade, Concessions, Soda Fountain and Candy store, Volleyball, Badminton & Basketball Courts! We will spend a couple hours here before we head back the ferry terminal . Please note:
Splashdown Water Park is subject to change. Students should be prepared to visit a different water facility on the mainland should Splashdown need to be removed from this trip.
