Jacques Morelli, Manager, WRC programme, Michelin Motorsport “Rally Argentina is probably the WRC’s most popular fixture given the tens of thousands of spectators who line the stages. The new soft-compound Michelin LTX Force S5 had a successful debut in Mexico and we expect it to be the number one choice for Rally Argentina’s sandy, relatively low-wearing roads. That said, the event is getting rougher every year and some portions have become very tough. The weather can be quite changeable, too. There was snow on ‘El Condor’ not so long ago!”

In 1983, Michelin monopolised the top four places with Audi (Mikkola, Blomqvist, Mouton, Mehta)

Michelin shipped 860 tyres to Argentina in two containers, plus two containers for its equipment

Michelin has won Rally Argentina 22 times as a WRC qualifying round Michelin won the 1981 event (the known as Rally Codasur) with Fréquelin/Todt (Talbot-Lotus)

First used in Mexico, the new LTX Force S5 is likely to play a key role Argentina.

MICHELIN AND RALLY ARGENTINA

In 1985, Timo Salonen (Peugeot 205 T16) earned Michelin’s 50th WRC win in Argentina

In 2004, Carlos Sainz (Citroën) scored his 26th and last WRC victory in Argentina with Michelin

RALLY ARGENTINA Rally Argentina was first a WRC round in 1980 and was hosted by several different cities (Tucuman, San Carlos de Bariloche, etc.) before settling in Cordoba province. Rallying is very popular in Cordoba province which frequently hosts the Dakar Rally. Rally Argentine is the only WRC round Sébastien Ogier has yet to win! This is Rally Argentina’s 35th time as a WRC qualifying round. Nineteen different drivers have won Rally Argentina. The most successful driver is Sébastien Loeb (8 wins).

Chief characteristics

The stages in the pampa and mountains of the Cordoba/Villa Carlos Paz region provide a bit of everything a driver could wish for, from fast sections and highly technical portions, to water splashes and big jumps. The stages tend

to be sandy and not too hard-wearing for tyres, but the roads have tended to cut up from year to year recently. Rally Argentina is consequently very rough in places.
