RESOLUTION NO. ADOPTED BY THE SACRAMENTO CITY COUNCI

Supporting the Goals and Purposes of the Justice for Janitors Campaign WHEREAS, the City of Sacramento has a vision of a just economy that benefits all members of our community; and WHEREAS, Service Employees International Union (SEIU) is engaged in a nationwide Justice for Janitors Campaign representing over 10,000 contract janitors and building maintenance workers in Northern California and Sacramento; and WHEREAS, the purposes of the campaign are to draw attention to the working conditions of janitors, build public support for the economic, social, and human rights of janitors, and improve the lives of janitors through union representation; and WHEREAS, janitors, a workforce hidden from public view, have the often thankless, backbreaking work of cleaning up after other workers and frequently clean the equivalent of over 20 homes on a single evenings's work; and WHEREAS, janitors who do not have the benefits of union representation and, like "Urban Farmworkers", frequently work for contractors for poverty-level wages without health benefits and have little job security; and 'WHEREAS, janitors have the right to unionize in order to free themselves from the marginal existence and suffering brought about by poverty wages; and WHEREAS, it is time to salute one of the fastest growing and least valued occupations in the United States today; janitors, who deserve decent wages, benefits, and respect for the vitally important work they do. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Mayor and City Council of the City of Sacramento that by the adoption of this resolution, the council of the City of Sacramento, does hereby support the rights of janitors to earn decent wages, to have job security, basic health care benefits and safe working conditions; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Council supports the goals and purposes of the Justice for Janitors Campaign.
