USAID EJO HEZA “A Brighter Future”
Who is Global Communities? Global Communities (formerly CHF International) is an international non-profit organization that works closely with communities worldwide to bring about sustainable changes that improve the lives and livelihoods of the vulnerable. Development is not something we do for people; it is something we do with them. We believe that the people who understand their needs best are the people of the community itself. We make a difference by engaging with communities, governments, the private sector and NGOs as partners for good – bringing together complementary strengths and shared responsibilities to work toward common goals.
What is USAID Ejo Heza? The USAID Integrated Improved Livelihoods Program (ILLP), commonly known as “Ejo Heza”, is an integrated development program designed to help meet Feed the Future’s global mandate to sustainably reduce global hunger and the Government of Rwanda’s (GOR) goals to increase agricultural production and improve nutrition. USAID Ejo Heza focuses in four main areas: improving adult literacy, providing access to financial services, increasing agricultural production and improved health and nutrition. 1
Partnership with local civil society organizations: The USAID
Ejo Heza program is implemented through local Rwanda Partner Organizations (RPOs). RPOs work directly with local authorities and community volunteers to deliver services through the program entry points: Literacy, Integrated Savings and Lending Groups, Cooperatives and Nutrition groups. They mobilize and organize community members into these entry points to enhance participation in program activities to improve their livelihoods.
Financial services: Forming savings and lending groups (Integrated
Savings and Lending Groups – ISLG’s), provide the tools needed for saving and investing and linkages to the formal financial sector. On the supply side, we work with financial service providers to provide outreach and products to beneficiaries in rural communities.
Literacy: Learning the basic skills of reading, writing and counting through a functional literacy curriculum, “Teaching with a Purpose” incorporates nutrition, agriculture and financial services in practical lessons, including exercises like using a mobile phone to improve everyday life skills.
Behavior Change and Communication (BCC): Through the use of radio, SMS, printed material, song, dance, drama and the Be the Change Volunteers, knowledge and skills are transferred around literacy, financial services, agriculture, health and nutrition.
Be the Change Volunteers (BCVs): The heart and soul of Ejo Heza, BCVs are community members who are self-selected volunteers that take leading roles in facilitating change within the communities. All BCVs are selected from these community groupings and are then trained to support their groups through mentorship.
Agriculture: Improving agriculture production through Farmer Field
Schools, provides practical demonstration of agriculture techniques including post harvest handling. The program also links beneficiaries to markets to increase household income for farmers.
Nutrition: Promoting better food utilization by incorporating basic nu-
trition training relies on technical trainings in kitchen gardens and cooking demonstrations. Messaging on breastfeeding, hand washing and anemia prevention are also disseminated through literacy classes and other Ejo Heza groups.
