Snake oil for hemorrhoids
o a search on the Internet for hemorrhoid pills and names like Venapro and Hem Relief crop up. The websites promoting these drugs claim that just by popping a few pills your hemorrhoids will disappear. Aside from the fact that ordering medication over the Internet is risky at best, the reality is that any drug claims related to the alleviation or elimination of hemorrhoids are as valid as the claims that the snake oil sold in the Wild West was an elixir that cured all. Remember those cowboy movies in which a “doctor” would ride David into town on a wagon Gutman, MD and peddle his potion to innocent audience members? Any drug that claims to work on hemorrhoids is exactly the same as snake oil—fake. Try to find the drug Venapro on a national drugstore chain’s website. You won’t. That’s because those pills don’t work. In fact, ask any doctor for a prescription for a hemorrhoid pill and you’ll come away empty handed. The reality is that there are no drugs,
pills, supplements, creams, or ointments that will make a hemorrhoid go away. In fact, no major pharmaceutical companies manufacture drugs that cure hemorrhoids. What will make your hemorrhoids go away are the minimally invasive options that I offer, right in the comfort of my office. Infrared Coagulation - I use a highintensity infrared light, similar to a laser, to reduce the blood flow and inflammation, addressing the problem at its source. CRH O’ Regan Method - This method allows me to apply gentle suction to the redundant tissue and easily place an elastic band to remove larger hemorrhoids. Both of these treatments take only a few seconds to do, and since they are performed in an area with no nerve endings are administered in the comfort of my office without anesthesia. There is virtually no pain, no prep needed, there are no major restrictions, and you don’t have to take time off of work. As always, our consultations are free of charge and our procedures are covered by insurance. To schedule a consultation with Dr. David Gutman of Advanced Hemorrhoid Specialists, call 216-772-4653.
