Take-a-kid-fishing day The Reedville Fishermen’s Museum and the Northumberland Family YMCA in Heathsville are collaborating for a fourth year on Take-A-Kid-Fishing Day. This project invites about two dozen children ages 8-12 from the YMCA Summer Camp, many of who are being exposed to boating and fishing for the first time, to spend a day on the water and at the Museum learning about the Chesapeake Bay and our fishing heritage. The children go out on boats to fish for a couple of hours and then return to the Museum for an education program followed by lunch. Boat Shop volunteers clean & cook the catch of the day and serve hot dogs. The youth have an opportunity to personalize t-shirts as mementos of a day of sun, sea, fun, and learning. This program is made possible by RFM volunteers and the generous donation of boats, fuel, and fishing gear by local boat captains who recognize the importance of educating our local youth about the Chesapeake Bay and the fishing industry. If you have a boat than can accommodate several kids, a chaperone, and a mate, and are willing to donate your time, fuel, and fishing gear, the Museum will provide a rider for insurance, as well as a tax donation letter to the captain. If you can help call the office at (804) 453-6529. Volunteers are also needed to help with cooking and education activities that will take place on the Museum campus.
