Honorable Deborah A. Batts Excerpted from an interview conducted by The HistoryMakers …

Explains her legal philosophy:

“If, if I have an ultimate goal as a judge, it’s to make sure that I’m fair. That if I have any preconceived ideas about a, a, a case or a topic that, that is set aside. And I am conscious of it but it does not inform the opinion.” Explains how her personal identity informs her legal philosophy:

“I’m African American, I’m a woman, and I’m gay. So I encompass three different experiences, if you will, in, in our society. And how that informs the way that I view a defendant or a plaintiff is, I mean, it, it, is there. It does not influence the result but it certainly influences how I view the person as they’re brought before me.”

Honorable Alford J. Dempsey, Jr. Judge, Superior Court of Fulton County, Georgia Harvard Law School Class of 1976 Morehouse College Class of 1972

Judge of the Magistrate Court of Fulton County (1992–1995)

Honorable Alford J. Dempsey, Jr. Excerpted from an interview conducted by The HistoryMakers …

Recalls his first day as a judge on the Fulton County Superior Court:

“Well, I came in and I go out and get on the bench, and I’m sitting there, and I’m looking around. And I’m just looking around and the sheriff comes on over after a little bit and says, he leans over and says, Judge, you got to start the court (laughter). And so I had, I was sitting there and forgot that I had to start court, you know. And so, it was a great way (laughter) to start a career.” Reflects on his service as a judge:

“I was called to the, to be a judge. I wasn’t, that wasn’t my goal, it wasn’t my objective. But like a lot of things, when folk in the community said, Dempsey, you need to do this for us, that’s why I got involved in this.”
