Emerson PTA Activities and Programs Emerson Parkside Academy is known for its active parents and highly involved PTA. Below is a description of some of the many activities and programs our PTA funds. We are excited to have you join our team! Join the Emerson PTA Association – General memberships to join the Emerson PTA Association are $8.50. For every member, the Emerson PTA pays $4.30 to help fund programs at the council, district, state and national PTA levels. We also pay fees for insurance, council fees, charitable trust, and franchise tax board. Additional donations are therefore greatly appreciated. Supporting PTA means that you support the efforts we take to help make Emerson the great school that it is. Attend meetings and you will stay informed about events and school information that happen throughout the year. Volunteer! – There are many opportunities to get involved as a volunteer at Emerson. Volunteers are needed as much as donations. To volunteer on campus, you must be registered with VIPS. We also have volunteer opportunities you can do from home. Back to School Packets- Packets are assembled during the summer by the Emerson PTA. The packets are sent home on the first day and contain items such as emergency cards, parent handbook, PTA directory and all the information to get your students year off to a great start! Back to School Bash- A fun evening party usually held in September. An outdoor movie, games, and food are just part of the fun! Big Red Bucket- Food items and grocery store gift cards are collected for Long Beach and Lakewood families in need during the month of November. Each “bucket” is assembled with a specific list of food items and a gift card so that the needy family may have a holiday meal. Blog- The Emerson PTA maintains a blog that has recaps of our meetings and events. Find us at emersonpta.blogspot.com Book Exchange- Once a week after school the Emerson PTA hosts a book exchange program. You may exchange a book for each book that you bring. We ask that you exchange like kind books, i.e. young reader book for young reader book, chapter book for chapter book. Book Fair- Scholastic Book Fair is held twice a year. This fundraiser is open for one week and gives the children and parents the opportunity to shop for books at school, while raising money for Emerson. Box Tops – Cut the pink box top symbol off of products such as Ziploc Bags, Juicy Juice, and many cereals and tape them to the sheets provided each month. Sheets and individual box tops may be turned in to the classroom or PTA mailbox outside the office. Visit www.btfe.com for even more ways to rack up the Box Tops, often without making a purchase. Last year we received over $2000.00. Classified Luncheon- Each year PTA hosts a luncheon towards the end of the year to thank classified employees like the office staff, custodians, cafeteria staff, school aides etc., for all their hard work helping our children. E-waste/Shredding- This fundraiser takes place twice a year. The community is invited to drop off an unlimited amount of e-waste products like old televisions, computer equipment, stereos etc. and can bring up to 3 business sized boxes of papers to shred. This event is not only excellent for our environment; it raises big funds for Emerson. Family Dinner Nights – Each month, Emerson will contract with a local restaurant to donate a portion of that night’s profits to Emerson PTA. Flyers will come home that will tell you the location and date of each restaurant. Be sure to bring the flyers with your family to ensure that Emerson gets credit for the dinner Field Trips- The Emerson PTA funds field trips each year with $2000 per grade level.

Fitness Day/Emerson Olympics– Emerson PTA sponsors a fitness themed day. Students are given donation forms to collect money and win prizes. The students come throughout the day and run through a course of different athletic exercises. The kids have a blast and last year we raised over $10,000.00! Honorary Service Awards- Each year the PTA honors individuals and groups who make outstanding contributions to Emerson. Past recipients have included active volunteers, teachers, and neighbors. A contribution is made to the California PTA’s scholarship fund in the name of each recipient. Meet the Masters- This extraordinary art program, the only formalized art education at Emerson, is fully funded by the PTA. The program includes assemblies that focus on the lives and art of a famous artist; a different artist is chosen each time. Trained volunteers then teach a project based on that artist's style. Projects are designed by grade level. The Mind Exercise (ME) Project- This innovative project will be held once a month after school. The project was created to provide sources for children to “exercise their minds”. Each month the Emerson PTA will host structured events consisting of music, art, science, and fitness activities. All activities are free of charge. Movie Nights- At least once a year, the PTA hosts after school movies or outdoor evening movies. PTA packets- Every Wednesday, the PTA sends home a packet with all the flyers and important information for the week. We have greatly reduced our paper and copying costs by sending home only one packet per family. The packet will be sent home to your youngest child’s classroom, so check the backpacks and read the packets! This year, we will try to reduce our expenses and carbon footprint even further by going to a fully electronic delivery system. Watch the packets for more details. Reading at home- In order to encourage our young readers to read every day, PTA sends home reading calendars to track the amount of time spent reading. The children are rewarded throughout the year with prizes, such as bookmarks and books. Recycling – Every Tuesday morning from 8:30-9:00 AM is Green Team Day at Emerson. Drop off your plastic bottles (caps removed) and aluminum cans in the front of the school and our Green Team will turn those recyclables into cash for PTA. No glass please. Red Ribbon Week- Every year the PTA decorates the school to remind the children of the importance of remaining drug-free. This year we will have a special Magic Show reminding children about the Magic of staying Drug-Free. Reflections- In the beginning of the school year the California PTA sponsors an art contest open to all students. Students may submit art in several different categories including Visual Arts, Photography, Literature, Musical Composition, Dance Choreography, and Film/Video Production. The PTA will host a free workshop to help the children brainstorm and start on their projects during the first PTA Association Meeting. The submissions are due in October. The submissions go through a series of judging starting at the school level all the way up to the state level. Submissions that make it to the state level will be shown at the California PTA Annual Convention and then will be sent out to Nationals! Room Reps- Room Reps are the main communicators to other parents. Most of this work is done by email. Room Parents regularly communicate information to the parents in their classroom. Other duties include arranging for someone to wrap their classroom’s silent auction basket, coordinating volunteers for two recycling mornings a year, and making the classroom’s carnival booth banner. A breakfast is held at the end of the year to celebrate this special group of parents. Salvation Army Shoe Drive- This event will take place in the Fall and again in the Spring. We collect gently used shoes of all varieties. The Salvation Army sends the shoes to countries in need all around the world. In exchange, the Salvation Army pays our school by the pound for the shoes. School Beautification- several times of the year PTA hosts cleaning, planting and sprucing up days at school. Bring the kids and tools and have a fun day making Emerson a beautiful place to learn.

School Cents – Shop at any location in the Lakewood, Cerritos and Downey Mall including the Costco, Costco Gas, Best Buy, Home Depot, restaurants and businesses on the property. Turn your receipts into the box located on the office counter. Points are awarded to Emerson PTA throughout the year based on the receipts. You will receive periodic information when those point totals are at their peak for your shopping. Schools compete for the most points. At the end of the year the program awards schools with a donation based on their point level. Last year, we received over $1000 from this program. Silent Auction – In late November, the Emerson PTA holds an annual Silent Auction fundraiser. For a few weeks during October and November we collect donations for the Auction. Have theater tickets, sports events tickets you can’t attend? Have a cabin in the local mountains you rent out? This is a great place to donate those items and help raise money for our school. At the end of the collection period we use the donated items and funds to buy really cool stuff to create the best silent auction baskets in Long Beach! The baskets are beautifully wrapped and photographed and put on our website for 5 days of online bidding. The highest bid online is the starting bid on auction day. Sweetheart Dance- This event takes place once a year around Valentine’s Day and is a family friendly event. Parents and theirs kids gather and have a fun-filled evening, complete with music, dancing, food, crafts, fun and festivities! Target Red Card- If you happen to use a Target Red credit card, call the customer service number on the back and designate Emerson as your school of choice. Each year Target sends us a percentage from all the purchases for the year. Easy fundraising! Teacher Appreciation- The PTA regularly tries to assist our amazing teachers. Throughout the year our teachers are rewarded with school supplies, luncheons, breakfasts etc. to remind them how much we appreciate what they do for our children. Trunk or Treat- On a day close to Halloween, parents decorate their cars in imaginative, Halloween themed glory! Families dress in costumes at this evening time event, parade by the cars, and receive treats. Participants may bring a carved pumpkin for judging and win a prize! Parents donate the candy and prizes to distribute to the children. Website- The PTA website, www.emersonpta.com, contains information about PTA events, board members, links, forms, and hosts the annual online portion of the silent auction. Yearbook- PTA produces a yearly book filled with pictures of students and staff along with all the cool activities we did throughout the year. Each 5th grade student receives a yearbook free of charge.
