About the Mormon Tabernacle Choir Less than a month after the Mormon pioneers arrived in Utah’s Salt Lake Valley in 1847, a small choir was gathered to sing for a church meeting to mark the beginning of what has become the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Now with 360 volunteer voices, the Choir continues to serve as a musical ambassador for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The Choir often performs with the Orchestra at Temple Square, a 110-piece all-volunteer symphony orchestra organized in 1999, and is heard by millions worldwide through television, radio, satellite and internet broadcasts, concert tours and recordings. Since its first tour in 1893, the Choir has traveled extensively across the United States as well as abroad to Europe, Israel, Russia, Japan and Australia, and it has performed at the inaugurations of six U.S. presidents. With the Utah Symphony Orchestra, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir performed for more than 3.5 billion people during the Opening Ceremony of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City. The Choir has a discography of more than 200 recordings that includes five gold and two platinum records and, in
1959, its release of “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” recorded with Eugene Ormandy and The Philadelphia Orchestra won a Grammy Award. The Choir’s weekly Music and the Spoken Word program has established an unparalleled record of continuous network broadcasting (since 1929) and is carried on radio, television and cable networks around the world. The Choir is led by Music Director Mack Wilberg, and he is assisted by Associate Director Ryan Murphy.
