A weekend 6 – Warsaw and its Vicinity days

DAY 1: WARSAW Arrival at Warsaw. 5 overnight stays in the capital of Poland. DAY 2: WARSAW An all-day tour of Warsaw: a walk in the Old Town, market Square – entirely reconstructed after WWII, St. John’s Cathedral, Royal Castle (an example of a reconstruction by experts of the so called Polish School of Reconstruction of Monuments of an object which was entirely destroyed by fire during the last war), Column of Zygmunt III Waza. In the Historical Museum of Warsaw the outline of the city history is displayed with the period of its splendour and a particular emphasis on the destruction of WWII. A fragment of the 16th century defensive walls with the Barbican give an insight into the former appearance of the city. The Monument and Museum of the Warsaw Uprising will remind of one of the most important events in the history of Poland. A walk along the following streets: Miodowa, Krakowskie Przedmieście and Nowy Świat, with palaces and Baroque churches. In the afternoon in the Łazienki Park a visit to the Palace on the Water. DAY 3: WARSAW Transfer to the former Jewish district with the Monument of the Ghetto Heroes, and then a walk to the Theatre Square with the old Warsaw town Hall which was accurately reconstructed a few years ago. A trip via the new city districts to Jan III Sobieski summer palace residence in Wilanów.

DAY 4: MAZOWSZE An all-day trip to the Kampinos National Park, to Żelazowa Wola – a manor house in which Chopin was born, to Łowicz – the regional capital of folk art and the beautiful palace in Nieborów. DAY 5: MODLIN – CZERWIEŃSK – PŁOCK A tour of the north-west part of Mazowsze with the ruins of the Modlin fortress, to the idyllic, Romanesque complex of the Czerwińsk Mon-

astery, and to Płock which prides itself on the 12th century architectural design and Poland’s oldest school of 1180. DAY 6: WARSAW Return flight from Warsaw.

city from the top, Old Market, Kraków Gate and Grodzka Gate, a a castle with a gothic chapel decorated with Byzantine-Russian paintings. Next in the Lithuanian Square the Monument of the Polish-Lithuanian Union (1569). A trip to Zamoyski Palace in Kozłówka: an impressive museum of the palace interior, a collection of monuments and sculpture of the Stalinist period, and the grave of Napoleonic soldiers from 1813. In the evening free time in Lublin and an overnight stay. DAY 4: MAJDANEK – CHEŁM – ZAMOŚĆ In the morning a short visit to Majdanek at one of the largest German concentration camps from WWII, where about 360,000 people from different countries were murdered – mainly Jews, Poles and Russians. Than a tour of Chełm: the city of Catholic and Orthodox churches, a walk along a fragment of the 12-kilometre underground corridors, which are as deep as 27 metres below the ground. In the afternoon arrival in Zamość: it is a city established by the Zamoyski family according to the special design of Bernardo Morando, an Italian architect. Unchanged: Town Hall, huge

market square with Italian style houses and the atmosphere of a south European city. The city has preserved its defensive walls and gates. DAY 5: ZWIERZYNIEC – BIŁGORAJ – LEŻAJSK – ŁAŃCUT A look at Zwierzyniec church on the water, a short visit to Biłgoraj to buy wickerwork products, in Leżajsk a tour of the Bernadine Abbey with its rich Baroque furnishings, and with one of Poland’s most beautiful organ with an exceptionally rich sound scale, which enables to produce special effects, e.g. the chirp of birds. In the afternoon a visit to Łańcut palace: it is a huge 17th century palace of the Lubomirski family, one of Poland’s most beautiful with such rich furnishings that it is considered more interesting than the Versailles! A beautiful park, palm house and carriage house wonderfully complement the program of the visit to this object. DAY 6: WIELICZKA – KRAKÓW Transfer to Kraków with a visit to the world’s unique Wieliczka salt mine (original equipment, a walk along the underground corridors and chambers richly sculpted in salt!) DAY 7: KRAKÓW A whole-day visit to the city: St. Mary’s Church, Cloth Hall, Floriańska Street with the Floriańska Gate, Grodzka Street and a visit to the Cathedral, and then to the Wawel Royal castle (a visit to the chamers, traesury and armoury). DAY 8: KRAKÓW Return flight from Kraków.

Free time or an afternoon walk in the Old Town (Market Square, St. John’s Cathedral, Royal Castle, Krakowskie Przedmieście and Nowy Świat) WARSAW A tour of Warsaw: the programme of the 1st day if it was not conducted plus the Warsaw Uprising Monument, the Ghetto Uprising Monument, Palace on the water in the Łazienki Park. If there is sufficient time, a trip to the Royal residence in Wilanów. DAY 2: RADZYMIN – CIECHANOWIEC – BIELSK PODLASKI A trip to the east of Poland with a visit to Radzymin with a cemetery commemorating the victorious battle over of the Poles with the Russians in 1920 (18th of the largest battles which affected the history of Europe). In Ciechanowiec a walk in the Podlasie Village Open-Air Museum and in Bielsk Podlaski an interesting 17th century church and orthodox church, and an icon painting school. In the evening arrival in Białowieża.

DAY 3: BIAŁOWIEŻA A whole day in Białowieża: the park and Natural History Museum of the Białowieża National Park (on UNESCO World Heritage list). Later a visit to the nature reserve: Europe’s most primeval forest. DAY 4: GRABARKA – SIEMIATYCZE – DROHICZYN A trip to the sacred place of the Polish Orthodox faith – Grabarka (an orthodox church and cemetery). In Siemiatycze a tour of the Baroque urban system with a Renaissance-Baroque church and a 19th century orthodox church. In Drohiczyn, located in a picturesque way on a high embankment: in the city three churches, an orthodox church and ruins of bunkers from the old German-Russian border in 1939-41. In the evening transfer to Warsaw for an overnight stay. DAY 5: WARSAW Return flight from Warsaw.

DAY 1: Arrival. Overnight stay in Gdańsk.

DAY 5: KWIDZYN – OSTRÓDA – OSTRÓDA– ELBLĄG CHANNEL – NIDZICA The Kwidzyn Castle (13th century) was the capital of the Bishopric of Pomesania. The Latrine Tower is the visual attraction and the castle displays also tools of torture (14th - 18th century). In Ostróda, apart from the 14th century Teutonic castle, the Europe’s unique Ostróda-Elbląg Channel has its end. A visit to the slipway and lock displaying the transport of boats over the water and land, with elevation reaching 100 metres.

DAY 2: BYTÓW Arrival at Gdańsk. Drive to Bytów. A visit to a 14th century castle. Overnight stay. DAY 3: ETHNOGRAPHIC PARK – MALBORK Transfer to the Kashubian Ethnographic Park In Wdzydze Kiszewskie, and later via Stara Kiszewa, with the ruins of a Teutonic castle, to Malbork.

A tour of the 13th century Teutonic castle, the largest brick medieval defensive structure. In the evening Son et lumière open-air show, and at night a spine-chilling tour accompanied by a guide and a monk. DAY 4: SZTUM – GNIEW A trip to Sztum castle (14th century), which played the role of a defensive bridgehead for the Malbork castle and was the residence of the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order. In the

DAY 2: GDAŃSK an all day tour. Itinerary: Main Town with the Town Hall, beautiful Hanseatic houses, the Artus Court and gates of the city walls. Among the numerous beautiful churches St. Mary’s Basilica is particularly worth seeing – one of the world’s largest churches. The walk includes the Monument of the Victims of December 1970 and a visit to Gdańsk Shipyard, in which Solidarity was established, which was the beginning of the fall of communism in the countries of the

former Eastern Bloc. A walk along the Motława to the antique Crane and a cruise in the port to Westerplatte, the place where WWII started. In the afternoon a visit to Oliwa Cistercian Abbey. DAY 3: SOPOT – GDYNIA – HEL A visit to the 19th century spa in Sopot, and the city and port in Gdynia, build from scratch in the 1920s. The ships moored at the pier are worth visiting: the over 100-year-old sail ship ORP ‘Dar Pomorza’, which participated in many cruises and competitions, and the destroyer ORP ‘Błyskawica’, the witness to many convoys and maritime operation of WWII. DAY 5: OLSZTYN – HITLER’S QUARTERS – ŚWIĘTA LIPKA A short visit to Olsztyn Old Town and a trip to the Masurian Great Lakes. A trip along numerous lakes to the Abbey of Święta Lipka with a beautiful Baroque decor and the lavishly decorated ‘moving’ organ. In the forest near Kętrzyn a visit to the ruins Adolf Hitler’s headquarters from WWII and the place of the coup of 1944. If the weather is good, a boat cruise on one of the lakes is planned. In Tarnowskie Góry a visit to a historic coal mine with underground excavation and a short boat trip in the Black Trout Drift. Transfer to Pszczyna to the palace, which was a castle originally, and then, after re-building it became a richly equipped palace, full of original furnishings. Nearby the palace there is a small interesting ethnographic museum.

A trip via Kamieniec Ząbkowicki with a huge 19th century castle of the Hohenzollerns, to Świdnica. You can see there a precious Evangelical-Augsburg Church of Peace, erected after the Thirty Year’s War with rich Baroque furnishings. The neighbouring St. Stanisław and Wacław church has the tallest tower in Lower Silesia (103 metres).
